pretty dumb trade IMO. pretty much just swapped picks. he likely wasnt going to stay in Detroit but seems like we should have got the better part of the trade.
With teams like Tampa Bay and the Rams needing help at this position and in win-now mode, the fact that we had to settle for trading him within the division AND had to give back picks to move him tells me a lot about how highly the rest of the league considers his skill set.

Why should one team get the better part of a trade? Isn't the whole point of a trade to benefit BOTH teams?
I don't understand why people keep saying the Vikings didn't give anything up. Yeah, I'm not crazy about the fact that they threw back 2 picks, but the Vikings still gave up 2 day three picks (most likely depth/role players at best) for 2 day two picks (potential starters/impact players). And in return they get a wildly inconsistent TE that has flashed at times but only under contract for one more season and counts $9.4M toward the cap next year.
Like him or not he was leading the NFL for TEs in YPC and YAC
I’d be willing to bet that 80-90% of the YAC from TJ came on 2 catches. That’s actually been a big knock on him over his career that he couldn’t produce after the catch.
I like TJ, he’s overrated, but he is a good TE. The Vikings did not steal him. I’m not crazy about basically using him to improve draft position in the next 2 drafts, but I also recognize he’s a guy that hasn’t been consistent, has had some injury issues, and will be demanding a top end TE contract.
I don’t love the trade, but I don’t hate it. It’s a fine return.
I saw some clarification that there was a “if it made sense for us” inside of him saying that. I’d assume that means if the offer was strong enough while they were 6-1. What that is?
He’s in a no win situation. He comes out and is honest and says we aren’t going to playoffs this season and TJ isn’t in our long term plans, people will jump on him, despite 99% of fans not thinking this was a playoff team before the season. He says this and people will rightfully call bullshit and say he’s playing both sides.

Agreed. I've heard rumors that in initial extension talks, the number was somewhere around $13M per year. Way too much to pay for a TE on a rebuilding team, and one of the reasons you never select a tight end with a top 10 pick. Brad and company knew they didn't want to pay him, and also knew they could get a better return on him now than in the offseason. Ultimately, we got 2 picks in the rounds where starters are found (2nd and 3rd) vs 2 picks in the 4th round where the chances of finding a starter drop from around 35% (3rd rounders) to 5% (4th rounders), plus a bunch of extra cap space.

That's where I'm at. Although I do still wonder what if Brad told them just the one 4th back and not the second one what would they have said? Maybe he tried?
And as for the money, David Njoku got $13.7M/year and he's probably not even the level of Hockenson, at least as a receiver.

Yeah Njoku got that deal and wasn’t coming off his best. would guess the starting point would be the Goedert and Kittle deals and Hock’s agent would be pushing to reset the market after Walker’s new deal. It just financially doesn’t make sense for Lions even if you have hopes of him hitting that level because the offense just doesn’t seem to be geared in that direction.

Only reason Hockenson made sense in the first place is because the O line and receiving was bad enough that we needed a TE who could block and catch well enough not to telegrap the play.
We don't need that any more (we can rotate without giving much up), so he was expendable.

And his blocking never lived up to the hype. It wasn't terrible, but very inconsistent and he seemed like a liability blocking more often than not.

Even that wouldn't have saved him. He was a gonner regardless.

If we project Hockenson's numbers in Minnesota (60 catches for 519 yards and three touchdowns in 10 games) over a full season, it would give him 102 catches for 882 yards and five touchdowns with the Vikings. This would put him on par with some of the best tight ends in the league including... Travis Kelce (110 catches, 1,338 yards, 12 TD) and make things expensive.
