Ben Johnson is probably making a very wise decision. The Hot coordinator thing rarely works out for someone as young as he. He has a great offense here in Detroit and can tweak it even more. Lions will probably look to add some OL help and DB help in the draft and FA. Maybe even another complementary WR in the draft and FA. Another DE would be in the mix as well. Hopefully the Front Office doesn't reach in FA and sign any players that are reaching the age of breaking down. Brad Holmes and company have avoided that for now. This team should get better in the next year. I feel good about where the Lions are.
I wonder how much is external vs internal. Meaning, how much of it is not sure about the jobs vs wanting to finish what he started and wanting to get the SB in Detroit. Let's be honest, if he leaves, that's a hard road to ever sniff a SB...so like players, perhaps he knows this is his best chance to get a ring?

My hope is that he doesn't really have any aspirations of being a head coach and just wants to be the X's & O's guy. But you gotta think at some point the money/ego factor takes over.

He's also a young guy, the more success he has in the post season he can punch his ticket when he thinks he is ready and go to a team he really is comfortable with

I think a lot of Johnson staying had to do with his family. I don't think they wanted to move around. Sure more cash can be enticing and to most people that is the only factor in taking a new job. But there are people out there that like what they are doing making a decent wage and just don't think the little extra is worth the hassle of all the extra scrutiny, extra work. Personally, I think these wunderkind OC/DCs in this league are getting the head coaching jobs too fast, and most of them burn out. Sure there are a few that become successful, but it is also dependent on the front office to do the right things to get the team together and that is where a lot of guys fail. Inexperienced coaches and bad GMs make for last place teams.

well said. its "the next best thing" syndrome as far as hiring the new hot OC or DC or whatever to get an edge for your team. to me I think whats more important is the core management and the teams that seriously compete every year dont have a HC or GM turnover every 4 or 5 years and i think that is part of the reason Ben turned down washington and i dont think he had a good chance at getting seattles HC job. so after that there wasnt anything worth the risk. just my opinion. and to add to that the HC is only as good as his GM and i dont think you will find much better than Holmes as far as how long hes been a GM. the established perrenial playoff teams have a GM thats been there a while as far as i know.

Gotta say, I'm loving all the BJ slander. He might be stuck with the Lions for a while. Although I do think a lot of it is the Commies trying to save face for botching the hiring process.

That’s 99.9% of it. Commanders are acting like a petty teenager.
I wonder how much the rest of the league likes this new ownership group. I mean I know they like their money.
But it would would seem like if you have a big group as owners you might get a situation like in the movie Office Space where Peter messes up the TPS reports and all his bosses come to up to him and asked if he read the memo. I picture something like that in Washington.

I know in Washington they're elated because it's not Dan Snyder.
I'm most curious about the supposed "basketball guys" comment. I mean, even if BJ said that, he would have said it in private. How would that get leaked? Could it be his agent thinking it would put out some of the fire he was under for bailing while they were in flight to see him?
So, a guy that always stops by my pop up at the farmers market has a brother that is apparently a nfl coach with some ties to washington...he's saying Washington is all in on trying to get the #1 for williams...not earth shattering, but interesting to keep an eye on

Not sure they would have to give up much since they have the 2nd pick, which might be to their detriment and have to give up more than they would in a normal situation. I see a few QB needy teams in the top ten. Although it would be funny to see the Bears get back their 2nd round pick they traded to Washington for Montez Sweat. Not that I want to see the Bears get more picks but it is inevitable.

If anybody knows you can leverage QB desperation into a huge haul of picks, even if it’s only one spot, it’s the Bears.

Bears are in a great spot. #1 pick and may or may not want a QB. Also have the #9 pick and could take a QB there. Washington is in a tough spot because so many other teams will be looking to jump them so they will have to overpay just to move up 1 spot. If I'm them I just stay put and roll with Maye or Daniels, or maybe even trade down, collect picks and roll with Howell or one of the second tier draft guys.
well if washington were t do what the lions did they would trade down for more picks, load up other places and go with howell another season. carolina proves you need more than just the number one QB to win.
You know, I think the bears have to take a qb, whether they trade down or not...Fields could be ok, maybe, maybe not...but more importantly, you get to start that 5 yr cheap salary over...I mean, trade down one spot and trade fields....tins of draft capital and a cheaper qb for 5 yrs...damn, kinda scary actually
