Do most coaches when they hire new coordinators say in January, this guy will call plays in September?
I doubt they have had a whole lot of discussion on the matter and probably need time to work together before those kind of decisions are made.
Not sure why this is a story to people.
Yes, I would assume that's a discussion since usually part of a coordinators job is to call plays.
I don't think it's a big story because I never thought the D would be anyone's but Patricia's, it was when Paul P was here, too. But if you are one of those people that is bothered by that and had any hope of a new DC coming in and making some changes, this isn't something you want to hear.
Now the hope is that Patricia's ego allows him to self scout and take in any valuable info from Undlin that may differ from what he's been doing.

Why would any head coach bringing in a position coach to be a first time coordinator immediately give the job to him to call plays from the get go? Wouldn't make more sense to the head coach who was a play caller for many years to help wing in the first time coordinator and take the reigns until that new guy can prove he can be the play caller?
But I guess naming him play caller from the gitgo makes most sense to the fans...
If Patricia really had that big of an ego, why not just not hire a DC like his mentor and just run the defense himself?
Cory Undlin said there hasn’t been a decision on who is calling plays on defense for Detroit this year.
And when Patricia hired old comrade Cory Undlin as his new D-coordinator earlier this month, it was reported Undlin wouldn't start out calling plays. Undlin, speaking to reporters Tuesday at the Senior Bowl for the first time since being hired, said he's not yet sure about this part of the job.
In fact, he said it didn't come up during the interview process.
"Matt asked me, 'Hey, I want you to be the D-coordinator.' I said, 'I would love to be the D-coordinator, OK,' and then we’ll deal with all that other stuff when we get back in the building and we go through it," Undlin said, via the Free Press.
Ok I find this this REALLY FUCKING WEIRD! Does this seem like a solid plan?
Maybe this is commonplace in the NFL. I rarely follow the ins and outs of the hirings of coordinators/position coaches of other teams to know what is the normal process.

Is this how your job interviews go?
Employer: hey Golden want to come work for me?
Golden: sure, ok I guess...what are my job duties?
Employer: I dunno, I really don't have a plan. I was forced by ownership to purge my staff and re-hire everybody. Just come in the office and we will figure it out, does that make you feel warm and fuzzy inside?
Golden: sure, I was about to get fired from my last job anyway so I'll come work for you and tell everybody who asks i dont know what I'll be doing because we have not talked about it yet and I just took the job because I needed one.

Actually when you are in a field long enough and you know exactly what the job entails but you want a promotion regardless if you think it will advance your career, but having it on your resume might.
Yeah....I think that happen more than you think. But you must be stuck in a dead end job and not have these experiences.
And I am only responding to you after the word duties because the rest is doodies (aka shit).
