For some reason, some of the recent moves have left me feeling a little different than I have of moves in the past. I seriously find myself questioning their moves more than the moves in the Millen days, for example. Perhaps thats because, succeed or fail, I always felt Millen at least had a clear vision of what he was trying to accomplish. Some of the moves this organization has been making has, at a minimum, left me scratching my head and Im not so sure they have a cohesive vision. Or perhaps they do and I'm just not seeing it because they are mad genius...or maybe just on the level of tech genius perhaps? So Im interested, are they just amateurs, are they mad genius or are they just going to lead to embarrassment on the level of Millen? Here are a few things that have got me recently..
At the end of the season, if memory serves correctly, Martha basically said that Quinn and Patricia were safe but that some changes had to be made, to the Defense if I remember right. So...they fire a bunch of position coaches and keep the DC, who I don't think ever really deserved the position. But wait, theres more...after keeping the DC, he then "walks away" a few days later. On top of this, they fires the ST coordinator, who had a pretty decent season and was named best ST Coordinator in the division. I mean, the optics on this just look...well, amateur, mad genius or embarrassing?
So lets talk about the Senior Bowl...the Lions assured the Senior Bowl officials that all of their coaching vacancies would be filled by Senior Bowl time...they were not. Are the Lions using the assistants they brought as on job interviews or did they just go bush league? I understand they brought more than enough people, but promising something and not delivering...amateur, mad genius or embarrassing? Speaking of Senior Bowl...seems to be some harsh criticism of Patricias coaching style there...I believe the quote that sticks out to me is..."He's going to get them killed" or something like that...
What about, as Vic brings up, drafting vs development? We can't blame the current staff for Tomlinson as he was drafted by Mayhew and then a new system came in, but how many players like Warford, Tomlinson, Van Noy, Diggs, etc are we going to see having, or at least contributing on Playoff teams? I mean here we are, this off season talking about letting Glasgow walk for nothing after spending a 3rd round pick on him and developing him...he isn't exact a scrub. I mean, is this approach amatuer, embarrassing or mad genius?
Feel free to share some of your own observations/concerns/questions...I'm really not trying to bash the Quinn and Patricia, I really am bafled and these were just a few recent things that have stood out to me. I really don't understand some of these moves and I feel they might be embarrassing more than anything, but that said, if they can put together a good draft, free agency and stay healthy next season, theres no reason to think they cant make a play for the division. Or is there?
