I think the real value for our late round picks is for trading down or for trading for vet players as we have just seen with Howard and Quinn. Even if these end up being just 1 year deals, like it is with Howard who is in a contract year, it makes sense because he does almost nothing to the cap at $2 million. It's really simply a rental. This is just an example, Howard never would have worked for us after we got Kerryon Johnson and the Bears would have been stupid to trade him to a conference opponent anyway.
Trading down also brings value to picks that otherwise go wasted, for us anyway. Pairing one of our 6th round picks with our 5th round pick should get us back into the 4th according to the trade value chart. Obviously it depends on whether we think we may lose out by waiting. This may end up looking like a reach but I'd much rather reach into the 4th instead of losing middle round picks to move up in the 2nd like we have done lately.
Would you trade a 6th and 7th from this year for a 5th next year? I would. Diminishing returns after the 5th round say do it. OR, we could grab another long snapper and other players who would have never been drafted because that's who we are. 4 picks in the last 2 rounds give us options of using them to acquire a player AND to move down. Now, if we fail to land a TE or WR in the first 5 rounds this draft is deep enough at those positions that we may just be able to find a player who could make the roster. In general, though, I would rather see them used to produce higher picks or proven talent.
