This is for fun and I hope you guys take it that way.
Trade down not an option, who do you take?
I was going to make a poll but I figured that makes no sense without knowing who goes 1-7. So I broke it into 3 questions.
Guys like Quennin Williams, Nick Bosa and Josh Allen are all most definitely gone. But I know there is a lot of talk going around guys moving up or down.
Answer these 3 questions:
1. Who would you take if the Lions could take any player (no trade down).
2. Who you think they should draft @ #8 knowing who should be around at the time they pick (list up to 3 in order if you choose, no trade down).
3. What do you think the Lions will do (select a player and indicate if you think they will trade down).
My picks:
1. Josh Allen
2. Devin White, Ed Oliver, TJ Hockenson
3. The Lions will trade down and select Devin Bush

1. I take Quinnen Williams. I think Josh Allen is a perfect fit for this D and he’d be #2, but I think Williams is best player in the draft.
2. Brian Burns. Let him play in the Kennard role on passing down and slowly work him in more. Will give you ability to move on from Kennard next year and I think you could have a special talent in a couple years. I don’t think there’s gonna be a player at 8, that I’d love without questions and Burns has some bust potential, but a huge ceiling. I’m tired of high floor/low ceiling guys. This D needs a playmaker. After that, probably Bush or Hockenson. They really need to trade down. I don’t think White or Oliver make it to 8.
3. I think if they stay put at 8, they take Jonah Williams. If they trade down, Christian Wilkins.

If trading down we can get Sweat if none of those 3 are on the board. I don’t ant an OL unless we trade Decker to Denver for Harris (cb) and swap 1st rd spots.

1. I would be happy with... Bosa, Q.Williams, or Allen 2. Take with chance to be there....White, Oliver, or Bush 3. Actually take...Hockenson if Jags don't take him...hoping for trade downs 4. Bonus...guys I don't want at 8....Gary, any WR or QB

Surprised to see so many people okay with Hockenson at 8. I think it's a horrible idea to spend a top 10 pick on a skill position other than QB unless it's a once in a generation type talent. Hockenson might end up being good but he is not that.

So any team in the top 10 that doesn’t need a QB is making a mistake with their pick? I feel like there’s some gray in between this black and white.
I think people are gonna be “ok” with a lot of picks including Hockenson, because there isn’t a lot of top end talent outside of Bosa, Williams, and Allen.

Sorry, meant to say skill position other than QB. I fixed it. In other words, I would not draft a RB, WR or TE in the top 10 ever, unless it is a rare talent.

That’s far more reasonable.
The other issue is, specifically with TE, how many TEs make even a minor impact their rookie years? Even the two best TEs in the game today - Kelce and Ertz did nothing their rookie years and took even 2-3 years before they were major impact players. And by the way they were both 2nd & 3rd round picks. In fact, the top 5 TEs last year (based on yards) were Ertz (2nd), Kelce (3rd), Kittle (5th), Hooper (3rd), Cook (3rd). So it would seem the sweet spot for TE is the 3rd round. Hockenson at 8 would be such a Millhew move.

This is not the year to be looking for big year 1 impact. I also don’t think you should be basing a draft pick which is a building block off of how much immediate return you get. If you think you have a future top TE, you don’t pass because there’s a DE that you think will be solid long term but might give you more early bang for the buck. I’m pretty sure the Cardinals or Jets would rather have take Ertz at 7 or 9 in hindsight vs Jonathan Cooper or Dee Milner.
Reality is, I really don’t want Hockenson at 8. There’s probably at least 2 guys I’d take ahead of him and not knowing how things will fall, in the end there will probably be 4-5 I’d rather have. But I get it, he’s a guy that’s shown to be well rounded and has a huge ceiling. And there’s not very many high ceiling guys in this draft.
But I get it, he’s a guy that’s shown to be well rounded and has a huge ceiling.
See, I guess that's my issue. I don't see the "huge" ceiling with Hockenson. I see his ceiling at about Dallas Clark, which is nice, but at #8 you better damn well be getting Antonio Gates or Jason Witten (who were undrafted and 3rd round picks respectively, by the way).
This is for fun and I hope you guys take it that way.

1) Josh Allen 2) Ed Oliver, Devin White, Jawaan Taylor 3) I have it on good authority that we're going to draft big Mike Williams and have the greatest offense the NFL has ever seen.

I don't see many people wanting Hockenson as the first choice for the pick, but I can't speak for others.
My point is maybe I would rather them draft the best guy at his position in the draft vs. using on a guy that might be 5th or 6th at his. If they don't draft defense, I don't envision them drafting the Hockster, maybe Jonah Williams.

Do you think if one of those teams in the top 10 in 2013 took Ertz or Kelce they’d be upset because they’re not on a trajectory to be an all time great?

No (other than maybe the Chiefs & Eagles), but that's not really my point. My point is you don't HAVE to draft a TE in the top 10 to land a Kelce or Ertz so why would you? In the last 12 drafts, one TE has been drafted in the top 10 and it was Ebron. In fact, just glancing through the last 12 or so drafts, it seems there are just as many TE busts in the 1st and 2nd round as there are in the 3rd and 4th.

Going back 12 drafts makes little sense to me since the league has changed so much just in the past couple. Beyond that, everything you wrote has nothing to do with the evaluation of Hockenson. You don’t pass on a guy because of the reasons you listed if you grade him out that high. You trust your evaluation.

Well, hopefully the grade and evaluation factors in positional impact.
I’m sure it does. One thing to keep in mind, both Quinn and Patricia come from an organization that valued that position highly. How much of that has carried over with them, I don’t know.
2 or 3 QB go in the top 7 and the Lions can get one of the top D players in the draft. If they end up with the TE I wont be sad but I wont be as happy.

Based on how they handled the position last offseason I'm guessing not as much.
