How is it?...this kid did not get more attention to get picked earlier in this draft. He did not get an invitation to the combine?????
Look at these stats below. Johnson is a Rusty Hilger "wet dream" for a 6th round pick
He is nearly 5' 11" and weighs 212 pounds. He has been laser timed in the 40 yard at 4.33 sec. His pro day 40 time was averaged 4.3 secs. He did 29 reps on the bench. 35 inch vertical.
348 carries for 2635 yards, 7.6 yards/carry average, 17tds --- 29 receptions for 318 yards, 11 yards/rec average, 2tds NO FUMBLES HIS ENTIRE COLLEGE CAREER.
He was also used as a kick returner with a 24.9 yard average with 2 tds.
Well the argument is he wasn't a starter at Maryland, he is purely a runner with little receiving or blocking ability and he has had injuries that have limited him. Obviously he is a workout warrior who has flashed on the field so for a 6th round pick what the hell he is worth a shot i'd probably rather have him than a old CJ Anderson.

You got to watch some film on this kid. Excellent vision, patient to allow blocks to be set up, finds cracks and finishes driving forward for positive yardage. If he gets to the secondary it is over, he is gone. I am positive he will get his share of carries with Kerryon Johnson.
The kid is a natural pass catcher from what I saw on film. His lack of receptions is probably due to coaching philosophy or scheme. Every RB has to learn pass blocking skills, and as talented as this kid is, he will get it.
P.S. I think CJ Anderson, Theo Riddick, and Zack Zenner are in trouble. The Lions will probably only keep 4 RBs FB and maybe Isaac Nauta as an H-back.

I think it’s riddik or Zenner or both gone. CJ is more of a power runner to compliment to Kerryon. Theo is on a steep decline while Zenner actually is a tweeter for power and feature but is good in special teams so if 1 goes IMO it will be Theo hopefully via trade for picks.

I think you have 2 locks in Kerryon and Anderson. I think someone is gonna have to show something special for a Riddick to go, otherwise he’d already be gone. Then you’ll have your 4th spot and ST will be major factor.

Anderson is not a lock. The Lions owe Anderson 450,000 guaranteed. However, they save over a million if Anderson is cut because Mark Thompson out performs him. In fact Anderson's 1.5 million salary will probably work against him.
Riddick has no special team value period. He has been inconsistent at best as a runner with 4.7 speed. He does have great hands, but that is not enough to keep him. Kerryon takes over 3rd down duties. I am not sure Riddick makes it through training camp. The Lions would save Riddick's base salary of 3.45 million.

I'm no CJ Anderson fan but I'll be very surprised if Mark Thompson makes the team over him. There's a reason he went undrafted and is now on his third team in a year and has yet to get an NFL snap. That said I would keep Zenner over Riddick. I'd be fine with Kerryon/Ty/Zenner/Anderson. Kerwynn Williams is worthless.

Yeah, I’m not sure where the Mark Thompson hype is coming from. If he shows out, he does, but I’d be very surprised if he takes a roster spot over Anderson. And a million dollars savings isn’t some significant savings for a team that’s even after draft signings, will probably be 20-22 million under the cap.

On Ty Johnson, he seem like more of special team/back up returner type. But I think with his injury during senior season, his stock plummeted. Could be a diamond in the rough, but until we see it. Most likely a ST or practice squad guy.
After watching some highlights he is definitely a patient one cut and run player, not much power or make you miss but once he reaches his extra gear in the 2nd level and beyond he can out run guys. We'll see if it translates to the NFL and if the Lions OL can give him a chance to produce because that style is pretty OL dependent.

It is not so much Mark Thompson hype, though I do love a RB with size and speed. Something is odd with CJ Anderson. Denver released him in April 2018 after he gave them a thousand yard season in 2017. He signed with the Panthers in May 2018 and was released in Nov. 2018. During his time there he averaged 4.3 yards/carry. He then signed with Raiders for 6 days in Dec. 2018. Something had to clash there. The Rams finally signed him on Dec. 18th 2018 and went through the playoffs averaging 4.1 yards/carry then was released.

Don't forget the Lions also brought him in for a visit and passed. I think he's just one of those dime-a-dozen guys but commands a bit more money than a younger guy and doesn't seem terribly motivated. I would love for a guy like Thompson to beat him out but I don't see it. I wish we would have signed Yeldon instead of Anderson. Anyone know how their contracts compare?
