For anyone questioning whether Goff has the talent to be a top-flight QB, watch The Rams/Vikings from 2018.
There is no question that, when the offensive game plan is doing what it's supposed to do, the supporting cast is doing their jobs and are where they're supposed to be, Goff puts on a clinic. The knock on him is that he's not the best at improvising; a little slow to adapt to changes in game plan.
A more patient coaching staff that's committed to putting him in a comfortable position where you're not asking him to go too much "off script" can go as far with this guy as they want to go.

I remember watching that game live, was a Thursday night game. Goff was fantastic, had a TD throw to the back of the end zone that was unreal.
Something happened though over the last couple years, beyond coaching/scheme. I question if he can ever put it together consistently again. I wonder how much of it is mental.
They pretty much had to trade Stafford and find another QB once he came into the office and demanded a trade
As far as getting Goff, he is a play off QB. What else were they supposed to do? I am sure if there was a good QB they would have drafted him at #2 overall.
The be fair to Goff, had had no weapons but one guy to throw to last year. They also transitioned from Linn who was a terrible hire and option at OC. A lot went on DC's first season. Add on top of that an absolute gutted roster and horrible dead cap situation inherited by Holmes.
Are the building a team around Goff? No, they are building a team...they needed WR's anyway. This is Goff's make it or break it season.

I'm guessing it's all mental. I'd like to see how he does with a staff that's willing to be patient and ride things out when he struggles, as opposed to losing their shit and cursing him out on the sidelines.
They were obviously patient with him last year, and he started showing signs of life. Now they're giving him say on a playbook that suit his strengths. If he doesn't show more resilience next year, then we'll know he's not the guy.

Goff answered this question pretty well. He impressed me with what he did in the last 10 games. If they have a QB there in the draft that they feel is a better option to win games long term, pull the trigger. But I don’t think there’s any pressure for that now with the way he played and with the confidence he seemed to regain. Gives them a lot of options.
the problem with Goff is the money hes making. lets say he is good enough to win it all. but hes not a top 5 QB. he would have to take a freaking huge pay cut to warrant keeping him and i dont think he will and i wouldnt pay him. so i see the Lions drafting a QB,
He’s not being paid top 5 money though. It’s around top 10-12 money, so really, it’s lining up.
They do need to draft a QB regardless, they need to develop a plan behind Goff whether he’s the long term guy or not. No more Boyle, Blough, or Sudfield types.
Happy to see my "best case scenario" expectations worked out and then some. Goff appears to be the right fit for this offense, this staff, this team. He won't be the one holding us back from anything, any more than Kurt Warner held back the 2000s Rams or Dan Marino held back the Dolphins during his career.
Too much is made of the QB position. Not nearly enough is made of turnovers, and he's significantly improved that part of his game. I'm good with where we're at, thanks. Another draft even half as good as this last one, and you're looking at a potential dynasty, and that's only a mild exaggeration.

Goff stays. Goff is flourishing with this coaching staff. I pray to God Ben Johnson stays as well at OC...give that man a raise!! I say we sure up our run defense. First pick that stud DT if available would be huge. A kickass LB and CB also, to counter Okudah. Another RB. I don't see Jamaal as a long term solution, Swift if healthy is effective. I got to go with that DT from Apopka Florida...Jalen Carter from Georgia. No way he's there at 6 but a stout DT to go with Pascal and a hard hitter LB and CB. There will be a good QB in the 2nd round. Hooker? Or DT Bresee?
Whatever the case, we just witnessed this team gelling as a whole. I've never been more confident in a Lions front office coaching situation when it also comes to the draft. As long as we don't go TE in the first or second...I'm good 👍

Goff counts $30.65M against the cap in 2023. Not great, but also not horrible when you look at some of the names around that or even higher (Matt Ryan...ouch). It's also the nature of these huge contracts where the cap number goes up as the contract matures. My worry is signing him to an extension and being right back in the situation we were in for 10+ years of paying top tier money and not getting top tier production. I would rather Goff just play out this season and draft a QB with one of the first round picks.
One guy that really intrigues me for the Lions (even before this season started) is Daniel Jones. I think he's a perfect fit for this offense. But he probably played well enough this year where the Giants will re-sign him (and likely overpay).
I could see Goff realizing this is a great fit gor him and likely his best opportunity, thus be willing to give a home town discount, at least to the point of it being reasonable to both sides. In other words, i could see him not demanding top dollar if he were to extend.

I'm tired of chasing the shiny object. Change for the sake of change.
You start a rookie, and you're right back to square one. This team is built to win now. No more "future" talk. No more "rebuild" crap. Tired of the new coach / new QB / new GM "if only we had a game changer at [whatever position]" bullshit excuses.
We're Lions fans, so it's a survival mechanism that we've adapted (over roughly 60 years), but it's time to start living in the present.

Fair point, but for the record I wasn't suggesting starting a rookie QB. I'm saying draft one in the first (if there is one they like) and let Goff start in 2023 with the rookie backing him up. Even if the rookie doesn't play, the coaching staff might at least have an idea if he at least has a chance of being the guy after a full training camp/pre-season/season.
I'm fine with Goff. We had Stafford for 12 years and he could make every throw in the book. Goff did a helluva job this year with the offense and it was top 5. You also don't go 8-2 the last ten without someone figuring you out and there weren't games where we were "figured out" - Carolina a borderline one. Build everything else, especially the defense and see where it goes with him but if we can get him for $35M a year for a 3 year extension in a few years and we are built well, I'm fine with that.
Tom Brady, Mark Rypien, Bart Starr, Roger Staubach were all 6 rd or later. So it can Happen
So you're telling me there's a chance...
Always a chance. Brock Purdy was Mr. Irrelevant last year as the last player taken in the draft. He very well could be the winning QB in this year's Superbowl. That would be something else. He is 3 games away from achieving that...a big maybe...but there is a chance. In my opinion he played the best of all the rookie QB's this year.
