This came up in another thread and I've also heard it come up in the media this week so I thought I'd throw it out there. Does anyone actually think Goff is the long-term answer at this point? And by long-term, I mean beyond 2024 when his current contract is up. I just don't see it. As well as he's played the last 8 or so games I think it would be a really bad idea to extend him beyond the current contract and repeat the same mistakes of the past. He's not close to elite level and he'll be 31 when his contract is up. With the potential QB depth in the 2023 draft they need to draft a QB in the first round with one of their 2 picks and potentially keep Goff around for 1 more year, no more than 2 as they groom someone else.
Does anyone actually think Goff is the long-term answer at this point?
Probably not. I just don't see them getting one of the top guys in the draft. Maybe one of the tier 2 guys (but still a first round graded talent) that they can develop for a year or two and see what happens. But like Vic said, his play will determine how long he stays here and whether or not they need to use their top pick in 2023 on defense.

Im not a Goff guy, at all...but kind of hard to argue with results.
Ive been a little worried Lions would have a good record and miss out on a QB, but if Goff keeps this up, Im ok skipping a high QB and rolling the dice again. Goff doesnt even have to be this good to warrant another 2 years, imagine some more resourses into the D...
In summary, if he keeps ballin, dont upset it. Dont extend yet, you can do that after the 2023 season if hes still ballin, or draft in 23 and sit for a year...best case, we have our qb for the next 4-6 yrs, worst case, we have a qb for 1.5 yrs...
I don’t think Goff has been as good as the numbers suggest, but he has been good. Thought he was pretty average the first 2 weeks, but played real well last 2, minus a couple hiccups. Question how sustainable is it? Not just him but entire offense. They’re definitely a good offense, but they’ve played some bad D’s outside of Philly. There’s definitely a lot to still happen, but if he plays like he has the last couple weeks consistently. It’s hard to walk away from that.
There is still a lot of football left, it will shake out. Like others have said, hard to even think about Goff with that defense. If it aint broke dont fix it.

Since I'm not as hyper-focused (i.e. obsessed) on the QB position as a lot of people are, I larf at phrases like "the answer."
:D
I don't care if a QB is the next Tom Brady. My only real criteria is if he plays well enough for a team to consistently get to the playoffs and compete for Superbowl appearances provided he has time to throw, receivers who can get open, and his team has a decent running game and at least an above average defense.
Without question, Goff has shown he checks that box throughout his career. He'll allow any decent GM to focus on building other parts of the roster, plug him in and not have to worry about him holding up his end of the bargain.
Throughout my life, I've watched this team chase after shiny object after shiny object. Constantly setting the team backwards going after guys like Andre Ware, Joey Harrington, throwing big money at Scott Mitchell. And shake my head over how many more solid seasons we could have had, if we had just plugged in a guy like Erik Kramer or even (gasp!) Charlie Batch (don't hate. It's hard to look past his 77.2 career QB rating).
Enough with this "answer" BS.

Goff's greatest success came with the Todd Gurley factor. I think he is a quite capable QB when equipped with a Great OL and Superior Running Game. That probably could be said for a lot of Quarterbacks though. The Defense sucks on this team right now. And unless the additions of DL Demetrius Taylor and Josh Paschal are the second coming... The road looks long and winding for this group. The Defense needs to reinvent themselves quickly. 30 plus points per game is totally unacceptable. They are lucky to have won one game. Maybe they can try to blitz more...I don't think the results could be much worse. Goff has done his part, even with a banged up running game, Wr group and OL.
I'm sold on Goff as the QB of the near future ? Please I beg you find me someone better who will come cheaper? Has anyone taken a notice to the FA signgins the last two years? QB's getting 50 million a year, WR's making over 20M? This is why they drafted Jameson Williams because they would rather pick what they think to be a sure thing than have to sign a FA to a 20 million contract.
Goff is scheduled to make 20 mil a year the next 2 years after this. This provides us a window to draft and develop a young QB. I wish we would have grabbed Sam Howell last year or heck at this point even the QB From Liberty. It would have been a nice option (in my non professional view) rather than Kirby Joseph or Paschal (when are these guys going to play).
Goff gives us a solid game manager, not someone who is going to go out and win us a game. We don't need that guy RIGHT NOW. If our defense could come up from the worst in the league to middle of the road we'd be in playoff contention (we have an EASY schedule). And if that's the goal, to make the playoffs, to be competitive we can do tha with Goff. Hell we could probably win a superbowl with him if we had a better defense.

Here's where it gets dicey. If he's counting over $30M against the cap, it makes it extremely difficult for said GM to be able to put all those other beautiful pieces you mention above in place.

Actually his cap hits the next 2 seasons are $30.65M & $31.65M.
I'm not speaking to whether his roster spot is financially justifiable.
Just my evaluation as a player.
If you want to get in to all that other stuff, he did also bring us in some additional draft picks, so you'd also have to factor that in to the equation of what kind of value he gives us as a "roster spot." Not to mention the possibility of restructuring, or how much he'd realistically get on the open market, etc. etc.

After watching TNF and Russell Wilson and Matt Ryan both just play like shit, I mean horrible quarterbacking....yeah if Goff continues this pace and the offense continues to be as prolific as it has been in September, that salary is totally justifiable. Again .. nothing to see here right now IMO. MUCH MUCH MUCH MUCH bigger needs to discuss. Non-story folks

That was horrible football last night. Can’t believe how bad those 2 teams look.

That's fair, though hard to evaluate. You could possibly argue without Goff we wouldn't have Jamo Williams (but like you I was against trading up for him).
Wilson, Murray, Watson, Mahomes, Josh Allen, Derek Carr, Matthew Stafford and Dak Prescott — are making at least $40 million per year
Thats this year, so there will be even more next year, and more the year after. So, if he continues even close tk the level he has been this year, $30 mil is a steal. Top 1p play for bottom half salary? Sign me up
That said, im not convinced his level of play is sustainable...but i sure hope it is...

That’s pretty much how I feel. The other thing is, if it is sustainable, he and his agent are calling for a new contract in line with those other guys.
In the end though, if it gets to that point, feels like a good problem to have.
I'd like to see the Lions draft someone to develop (not the kid from Florida please). Goff is our QB for the foreseeable near future and deservedly so. But I fear Goff's success is tied to Ben Johnson and we maybe lucky to get one more year with him if Goff and the Lions offense has another good season. Goff is being undervalued, despite his mid tier pff rating, he still executes the offense and somehow makes the needed throw despite him being ranked 20th or whatever bullshit they have him rated at.
