Richardson will over valued by fans. He just isn't very polished. People see Hurts, Fields, Lamar and think this guy is them. I have questions about his accuracy and think he would fail if thrown into the fire immediately.
too me, this is a Young and Stroud QB draft class everyone else is secondary. People hate Stroud because he isn't mobile, but he could be the best passer in this draft.
Richardson is not plug n play.
Physically he has the tools, if he has the "it factor mentally", in a few years he could be the best QB from the draft by a long margin. Not sure about him mentally. His arm is very strong.
I like Hendon Hooker a lot more than Richardson. Hooker lifted Tennessee to a higher level of play and had improved his own performance after joining the SEC. Richardson however, did not, in fact, his poor decision making, and bad mechanics were a detriment that hurt his team. I say there is a lot of bad habits that have to be weeded out before Richardson could ever be a franchise QB. 75% of QB play is between the ears. My vote is a big NO!
I like Hooker, but he’s also going to need some time. what an NFL offense is going to ask him to do is a lot different than what Tennessee’s offense asked him to do.

I'll have to consult the youtube scouting report. I have not seen much of him.
Ugh...i dont think you take a qb just to take a qb...i dont think you use a #6 on a qb you arent 125% sold on just to save a few dollars from goff in 2 years...
Speaking of goff, i dont think he is a $50 mil qb, and i suspect he knows that. I think he will likely extend for a reasonable (defined as a step below top qb pay) because he knows this is his best chance for success and he will be unlikely to have success elsewhere....in addition, he sees it as a way to repay the opportunity and faith Holmes et al have had in him....
Also, you take a guy at #6 and you are telling goff he is done here...his confidence waivers, his focus, etc...nah, no #6 qb for so many reasons...
Im torn because I am all about building for the long term, but I also see an immediate window with a few D free agents and a draft pick or two...but that window is predicated on Goff. I think he falls apart if you take a QB high...you spend 2 years building him up and getting him to be what you need and I think its wasted if he knows he didnt have the trust of the gm and is being replaced...just my thinking...
And yea, $40-45M will prob be that medium qb rate...

Id say if Goff falls apart that easily, they really don’t have a window.
But I get what you’re saying, it does make sense. My worry is they’re trying to hedge and do both and I’m not sure you can. If they want to try and do it in this window with Goff then they should be aggressive and try to make moves to put the gas down and win it. I don’t get the impression that’s how they’re going to play it though. Feel like they want to slow build still and try to do it with Goff and that’s seems so hard to do. Can easily see them winning 10-11 games next year and winning a playoff game or 2 and then the excitement is high, but then you gotta give Goff that 5/200-225 with 60-70% guaranteed and then the margin for error in keeping the strong team around him becomes so much smaller going forward.
I do have some faith in the front office and staff that they have a plan with multiple scenarios mapped out so they can pivot. Just hard because they’re in a prime spot now to take a swing.

If that's the case then he's definitely not the guy. I would hope the opposite would happen.
2021 vs 2022 shows that to be true, not sure that means he isnt the guy...mcvay threw him under, he got worse with no one in his corner...holmes et al builds him back up and he thrives. You get his replacement and it was all lies.
You may not respond that way, but its basic psychology....

I think the Rams situation was completely different from drafting a rookie as a "potential" replacement. With the Rams he wasn't performing the way McVay wanted him to, so he traded him for a different guy. It's not like they brought in his heir apparent while he was still there. I would hope a rookie QB would motivate Goff even more, especially since he is pretty much locked in as the starter for 2023 no matter what the Lions do at QB this offseason. The better he plays this year, the better it will be for his next contract no matter where he plays, and he knows that.
Yeah, i dont think hes that type of player...maybe he is, but i dont think so
Remember, McVay was making it known Goff wasnt his guy...i think he got worse once mcvay started throwing him under...i think the same thing happens if you take a qb #6.
You think he should rise to the challenge of having the heir apparent drafted, i think it fucks with his confidence that they lied "he was their guy" and he regresses...

I'm not saying you're wrong, but if you're right, that's not the guy I want to pay $40 Million+ per year in hopes he leads the team to playoff wins and Super Bowls.

The problem with Hooker is the dude is old (for NFL rookie standards) and probably wouldn't or shouldn't see the field for a couple seasons and then you basically have a rookie 27 year old QB.
If the Lions brass are sold on Richardson, then picking him at #6 is a must and you might have just traded your old franchise QB for a new one. And giving him the Mahomes/Rodgers route of sitting for a bit might be beneficial.
My opinion can wildly change once FA starts next week. Because I think a lot of people are expecting to sign a big time player or two, but I am questioning if they will actually do that. Building the team with young talent seems to be the way they go.

Felix, Out of curiosity, does your opinion change if they draft say, a Hendon Hooker type in round 2 or 3?
yes, a mid/late 2nd or 3rd has little expectation of being a starter and its a known they want a backup, so yes, i think that would avoid the confidence issue
No to each of the QBs in this draft at #6. If you want a developmental guy who is going to sit, get someone in the 4th or later.
As far as Goff goes, we have cap space to pay him the $40M. Let's take a look at the next few years- 2023 - Roughly $23M in space and could have more with a few cuts (Vitai - $6.5M in 2023, $9.5M in 2024, Stenberg/Cephus, $1M each in 2023, Harris/Okwara $4-5M each or rework their contracts) 2024- $132M in space with 22 players signed. Free agents that need new deals here are: Jonah Jackson, DeAndre Swift and Jeff Okudah. Goff is already paid for the year 2025 - 10 players under contract and $230M in space - plenty of room for Goff and signing Sewell, St. Brown, McNeill, etc.
Basically, we have talked about Holmes working the draft really well but he has the Lions cap in incredible shape for the years to come. This is because he has signed mid level free agents on shorter deals. Now, can he continue his drafting and can he find the RIGHT free agent to finish out the roster to get us into perennial contention.
That starts by JUST SAYING NO to QBs in the first 3 rounds.
Im guessing by the time you look at those carr and jones contracts closely they are in the $30-35M/yr avg range. Guessing there is some unlikely bonuses and stuff that will fall off the back end if cut.
And I cant help but yhink Goff will reward the Lions with a team friendly, but fair, contract for working with him, giving him a chance and tailoring the O to his strengths. I dont think he looks to set the market and think he understands the two way street of this.

I'm convinced the union implores players (and especially QBs) not to do this. Otherwise, I think you would see more QBs doing it. I mean, I know there are some guys that are just all about ego, but you would think guys that are on their 3rd contract and just want to win a Super Bowl would be willing to settle for a good bit less.
