That's part of the genius of BJ and DC, offensively. They'll surprise you by bringing in the short-yardage package and then lob one to a TE. And a blocking TE no less (even Penei got in on the action).
I don't think there's any more we need out of the offense at this point. An upgraded backfield would just be icing on the cake.
Doesn't have to be Robinson or major resources, but I do think they need to address RB to some degree even if they re-sign Jamaal (and especially if they don't). Swift can't be trusted to stay on the field and even though Jamaal has less tread on the tires than most 28 year old RBs, you never know when an NFL running back will start to break down.

Craig Reynolds has produced whenever called on to carry the load. Not flashy, just productive. Swift, unfortunately, isn't a guy who's going to carry the load, but if they limit him to a supporting role from day one, I think he can be preserved enough as long as you don't ask him to be a featured back.
And Jackson has shown a lot of versatility.
I feel "okay" with Swift/Reynolds/Jackson. But I agree that an extra back on day 2 would be a welcomed addition.

I like Reynolds. Not even sure he's much of a drop-off from Williams. Jackson is meh...definition of dime-a-dozen. Although he's pretty good in pass protection.

I was surprised to see how close Reynolds was to not making the team last year when watching hard knocks. Have to think he’ll be fighting for a spot again.

I don't really remember the details of that, but wasn't he the one they profiled and showed him talking to his brother in prison? Could be they dramatized that for the show.

His career average ypc is 4.3. And even this past season 4.4, despite the (very) limited action.

Possibly built up some, but they showed some talks between all the staff towards the 53 cut about trying to figure to keep him or Godwin and it looked like it was really close. Think ST was a big factor.
NFL current trends in drafting RB's is to draft multiple RB's and split up the workload between 3 RB's. Kind of makes sense to draft RB's with multiple skill sets and not put all your eggs in one basket. Diversity reigns in today's NFL. I don't think the current lion's management is going to draft a RB in the first round. I tend to agree. This draft should be very, very heavy on Defense. I could see as project OT taken too.
Very few RBs come out of college with size, speed and the entire RB skill set in one basket. In fact, Marshall Faulk was arguably the only one. So, it is not really a trend as much as necessity that teams have to use multiple RBs to complete their offense. However, using a different RB for rushing, passing, and short yardage provides a tell, that helps the defense predict what the offense will do, reducing their chance for success on any given play. I believe Bijan Robinson has the entire RB skill set which will improve the Lion's offense immensely by eliminating the tell. I also believe he will be the Offensive Rookie of the Year and don't want to play against him in the playoffs next year.
I would definitely agree that as far as the RB group goes there is Bijan Robinson, then the rest of them. However, I think that he might even be gone before #6 and at #18 unlikely to be there. Lions have a chance to pick 2 very good defensive players which would help their team a lot more than a RB. The OL is there for a guy like Bijan and it would be a focus for teams to key on him. McCaffrey has a similar skill set. Not exactly but apples and oranges. I could even see the lions trading out of the #6 spot for a load of picks. This draft is not so do or die after having picked early in the past few drafts. So, the Lions can wheel and deal with teams on trades that really help. I hope that happens, be nice to pick up multiple picks in the early rds and load up for a change. This group of front office people seem to draft wisely. Keep it up guys.
I have to say this. Reviewing Holmes history as a College Scouting Director for the Rams, he has always taken talent over need. Case in point, Holmes took Todd Gurley at the number 10 pick in the 2015 draft even though the Rams defense was ranked in the bottom 3rd of the NFL in 2014. Bijan Robinson is the most talented football player in this draft, so I am preparing you guys.

I don't think he does it at 6, but a trade down or #18 is certainly possible. Also, Les Snead was running the show with the Rams so we don't know how much input direct impact Holmes had on that, but Holmes has somewhat shown the talent over need philosophy in his 2 drafts. Given that, get ready for Michael Mayer at 18...
You should draft talent over need. Draft is for long term. Fill your needs in free agency, draft the best talent.
I agree, but I still think you have to consider value of the position and bang for your buck. If a team has Robinson #1 on their board, does that mean you draft him #1?

Sure, there’s always positional value and an element of need added in(more long term than immediate) But that should all be factored in to your final board.
With Robinson if he’s your #1, I’d imagine it’s because there’s a massive gap between him and #2. I can’t imagine that will be the case. More likely a team has him as top 10 pick and is making the choice between him and a lower ranked player at more valuable position. I do think teams have those things factored in when they build their final board, so that they’re not going back and forth for 10 minutes.

I could see Holmes & Co really valuing Mayer for his blocking.
Washington from Georgia would be an awesome fit. Guy is almost an extra OL and his receiving skills got a little lost because of how good Bowers is. May be there on day 2.

Yeah, and I think he fits the culture better than Mayer.

A TE that most evaluators compare, Mayer's talent and size, to Jason Whitten of the Cowboys. Whitten, who was taken in round 3 at pick 69. Why would Holmes take a day 2 pick in the 1st round, when we want to take the best talent available. How do you explain the contradiction of trading away a 1st round Pro Bowl TE, so we could draft another 1st round TE with day 2 talent.
If I didn't know better BB, I would think you are trying to trivialize my opinion (Robinson's talent evaluation) with this ridiculous suggestion.

I don’t understand the logic of Witten taken on day 2, Mayer compared to Witten so that means Mayer is a day 2 talent? So if a QB is compared to Brady he’s a day 3 talent, but if he’s compared to J’Marcus Russell he’s a day 1?
And the logic of trading Hockenson and drafting a TE would be the cost. Hockenson is going to be in line for a monster contract.
That said, I wouldn’t take a TE in 1st this year, there’s enough depth to find value later and I’m not sure how much the position is valued in the offense.
