We DO NOT need to draft a QB right now. That comes next year.we need DEFENSE and maybe a RB to get to the SB.
Look at who is playing in the Superbowl, those two QBs are pretty special. I would argue you can goto the playoffs with Goff, not sure about winning the big one unless you have the absolute best running game and defense in the game. It has been done before with Trent Dilfer, but that path is far from the norm. I don't know if there is a slam dunk all star Qb in the draft, that is the only thing that would hold me back.

Why is the default "Trent Dilfer won a Super Bowl"? Dude played 11 games for the Ravens that year and had 12 TDs and 11 INTs. Goff threw for almost 4 times as many yards, 2.5 times as many TDs and nearly half the interceptions.
Once and for all - GOFF ISN'T THE ISSUE. Mahomes is a "1/1" type player and there aren't many like him. Burrow is in that tier, Rodgers is in that tier. Allen can't win the big game. Hurts has an offensive line, a defensive line and a running game but isn't "pretty special" as he has had one solid year. The Eagles beat the Giants in their divisional game - a team the Lions dominated in THEIR BUILDING. They then dominated a 49ers team who were on their 4th QB when he got blown up and their 3rd QB had to go in with a TORN UCL!
There is no star QB in this next draft. Young? Lucky if he is 5'9. Stroud? I don't like QBs who have to look at the sideline to be told what play to run. See Baker Mayfield, Justin Fields, etc. Levis? PFFFFT.
Goff isn't an all-pro but you have a system that works for him. Our defense the last 10 games helped him enough to an 8-2 record. A better start and you are probably hosting a playoff game instead of out. But, please stop with the TRENT DILFER did it bologna.

Trent Dilfer is the new Head Football coach at UAB. I smell a powerhouse.
We can sit here and name average QBs that one the SB. But like I said that is not the norm. I am not saying Goff is an issue, hsve defended him quite a bit. But at some point the Lions are going goto have to deal with eithier paying him or moving on. Eithier way there needs to be someone in the wings they are developing.

That some point is after this season. No way are Lions or Goff going into 2024 with that one year hanging there and no plan in place. He’ll either be getting paid or Lions will be looking for a QB. Question is what kind of position will they be in to get one if they’re looking?

Yeah, the Trent Dilfer argument is tired. He also had arguably the best defense in the history of the NFL. Possibly a better argument is Joe Flacco. But as middle-tier as he was, he went on a crazy playoff run that I still to this day can't wrap my head around. Then there is also Nick Foles and Stafford.
The Goff situation is a quandary. Obviously he has shown he is capable of getting to the Super Bowl if all the pieces are there...but how confident are we that all the pieces will be in place and they all stay healthy? As we've seen based on history, there's a reason none of those guys previously mentioned haven't won more than one Super Bowl let alone even get to another Super Bowl. My fear with Goff is that he continues to play just good enough to where the Lions think he's the guy and give him an extension, making it MUCH harder to put the much needed pieces in place around him to allow him to continue to succeed (see Joe Flacco). I'm all for letting Goff ride out the current contract. Also not opposed to drafting a QB high if there is a guy they think is a franchise level guy. I think Young is the only one in this class that has a chance to be elite though. But wouldn't surprise me at all if 2-3 other guys end up being franchise-altering. Just remember how a lot of so-called "experts" didn't think guys like Mahomes, Allen, Herbert, Hurts, Jackson could be elite, and why they didn't get drafted at the top of the draft.

That's why I really think they need to address it this year. They have 4 picks in the top 56 picks, including the #6 overall. They will likely never have the draft capital they have ever again. If there is a guy they think can be a franchise guy, they need to roll the dice. Even if it's someone like Richardson that scares the crap out of me.

nah...if youre truly only 1 piece away, you can trade to move up and it shouldnt matter if you lose a first rd pick...

My point exactly Vic. Aside from Bryce Young who would be a great pick though he won't be there it would be better to build a defense and bolster the RB spot First so when we do draft a QB hopefully next year the transition will be easier since the team will be stronger. That's the key. Use these picks to help the D this year! Wasting a first round pick now when we still have some holes to fill would not help in the near future. It'd be a wasted pick since Goff is the starter

Perhaps, but easier said than done. As a recent example of that, in 2021 SF traded three first round picks and a 3rd to move up to #3 for Trey Lance. And SF had the #12 overall to give up that year. If things go the way we all hope, the Lions will be picking in the 20's next year. So would take even more to move up that high.

If they’re in the 20’s I’d assume Goff is getting a new contract. But yeah, easier said then done. Also have to hope that team/teams are willing to trade and aren’t set on taking the QB for their own team.

Maybe. But I could see a situation where he plays similar to 2022, they make the playoffs and lose behind a pedestrian performance by him. I know that's a pretty broad scenario, but do you extend him then?

Yeah, I think there are situations where they could be a playoff team and still be looking next year. Just think they’re probably unlikely.

I agree Vic, would love to see Lions draft Hendon Hooker in the 2nd round if available.

I would not be opposed to that. Only problem with Hooker is he might be as old as Goff is now by the time he starts.
