I’ve seen it floated around a lot and it’s off-season so worth throwing around. Would you try and trade for Jalen Ramsey?
Might be biggest hole on the roster, but cost/age/trade cost is a factor. Ramsey will be 29, but you have enough examples of CB’s playing well into early 30’s. Cost is high, you may have to do some magic with the numbers to make it easier to digest. Then you have to figure out what you’d give up. 18?, 48 plus other comp?
Tough for me, Ramsey was probably my favorite player ever coming out of the draft and I still think he’s playing at an extremely high level. Watch that Seattle game and he almost single handedly shut down their offense. He locked up Metcalf, made plays in run game, almost blocked an extra point. His play with growth of young players and help from draft/FA could turn this in to upper half D at least. But allocating a lot of money and possibly losing 5 years of rookie control if you move pick 18. Have to weigh that. 48 and other comp would be easier to swallow. But is that enough to get it done?
Other question, does he fit in here? Ramsey is as competitive as they come, but some times that boils over into emotions that can create an issue. On a more veteran heavy D and team, that’s easier to handle.
There’s plenty of guys within org and even coaching staff that have experience with him.
Who fucking knows? Figured it would be fun to talk about.

I definitely wouldn't give up a first. A second I might listen, but I think I'd rather just sign Dean, Bradberry or Sutton and not have to give up the draft capital.

Would imagine it comes with an extension with some junk money or void years that ease up those numbers from Rams restructuring.
so, do you take off the signing bonus portion of that? Rams have to pay the signing bonus, right? So...+/- 20 mil per....yeah, little steep...might have to pass on that

Rams are on the hook for bonus money, but not sure how it affects the cap hits. It’s definitely steep, especially since Rams restructured it, which would make me think they’d have to redo it with some new money they’d throw into back end.

Not sure exactly how the signing bonus stuff works, but all I care about is the cap hit and according to that it looks like the cap hit in 2023 is $25.2M, increasing to $26.7M in 2024 with no reasonable out until 2025. Not sure if the Rams would take on some of that cap hit in a trade.
The more I think about it, the more I feel like trading for a guy like Ramsey would kind of go against everything they've been trying to build the last 2 years.

There’s an out after this year, though if you had to use it, the whole trade would be a failure in the first place.
My reason for thinking about a trade like this is the lack of premium players on the roster. It’s hard to win without those guys. There’s some guys on their way, but you also have windows and I think there’s a little bit of an unrealistic expectation that Holmes drafts are gonna consistently be like last years. That’s a tall ask. I’m all for continuing to build through the draft, but you do have to capitalize when you have a window, too and it’s hard to do that without some high end talent. Whether it’s Ramsey or someone else, I do hope they’re more aggressive at trying to add some to the roster.

He didn't have one of his better years last year.... 28-29 years old..... That is getting into a dangerous age range. Definitely has been an A+ Player.. Rams look like they are ready to start dumping big name players to reload. History is not on the Lions side when making big trades like this. Could be different under Holmes... I would let some other team trade for him and keep the draft choices.

i believe bonuses stay with the original team and base salary and incentives become the new team responsibility. I think the signing bonus was 25 mil over a 4 or 5 yr extension, so 5-6 mil off the cap hit as you see it...or +/- 20 mil per season...
It’s borderline top 10 cap hit for a CB next year. I get being hesitant for reasons like trade comp and whether he fits in with what they’re building, but the cap hit now doesn’t worry me. JC Jackson, last years big FA CB, has a 17 million cap hit this upcoming year, Byron Jones a couple years ago was the big FA signing 18+ cap hit.
I have no issue going after a guy like Dean or Bradberry, but expect them to get monster deals that are gonna give the same kind of hits.
Not sure if it’s right but after a little digging, I think the cap hits would be around 17 next 2 years and 15 in final year.
im fairly certain thats how it works...team takes on contract but original team is stuck with bonus, big reason why nfl trades arent common, those signing bonus hits can be brutal...
and thats actually not bad, better than the 25+ mil he costs the rams

If the Rams are wanting to reduce his cap hit and move on, I'd offer them Minny's 2nd rounder this year and a conditional pick next year, and see if they bite. If they're looking for more than that, I'd pass.

Of course who knows if Rams are even interested in moving him. I’d imagine they’d listen, but they’re also a team that was willing to go big on a trade for Brian Burns mid season last year. They may just run it back with guys coming back healthy.
