Was a little surprised by this move. I expected them to just keep him red shirted for the year. You have to wonder if this was done off the chance the week 18 game will be meaningless and he'll get some live snaps.

Be interested to see if throw a few wrinkles in there with packages for him. Something to keep opposing D’s off balance.

This was all done to help his development and the Lions practice team. But more importantly, a super emergency break in case after the 49ers debacle in the NFCC game last year. The Lions were actually the one who initiated the 3rd emergency QB who is on the active roster but can be listed on the inactives for the week but can still play if the 1st or 2nd QB go down in a game.
If Goff and Bridgewater are healthy enough to play, he will never see the field.
With Teddy announcing his retirement after the season, I think the Lions would turn to him if the Lions had nothing to play for in week 18.
Lions are not going to risk another injury if they don't have to, especially for a "gadget play".
Hooker will only see the field if the worst thing happens.
I do agree Bridgewater would likely get the start if week 18 is meaningless. But I could definitely see Hooker coming in at some point in the second half.
And MC/DC has never struck me as a guy too worried about injuries if it means taking your foot off the gas.

Take it for what it’s worth. But when they asked him about resting guys the final week, he said something like “they’ll have plenty of time to rest after the season”.

It was either that or shut him down for the rest of the season. And if you have any plans for the guy at all in your future, it wouldn't be cool in the least to not have him there in meetings and on the practice field during a playoff run.
