Reality is we do not have any sacks and very low qb pressures and our #2 pass rusher is hurt playing on special teams
He’s also part of the reason for those low numbers. Guys play special teams Vic, don’t know what to tell you. Go look at special teams snaps on other teams. You’d be surprised the guys that play special teams. You can only dress so many guys which means giys have to play special teams.
While I am certainly happy the defense has been posting better stats, mainly turnovers and sacks, I am still not sold on them
I will say it is definitely encouraging they have been doing better...but they haven't really been doing it against top competition...
I will say it was concerning to see a rookie QB throw 3 TDs today...it was obvious to even the most casual of observers that the game plan was to throw short all day...and the Lions couldn't really stop it...Panthers stopped themselves as much or more than lions stopped them.
My only hope is these cupcake games are providing learning time and they will be better in the playoffs...I don't see this team beating SF or Philly with this D as is...Dallas game is looking to be a good barameter for this team....
I think the competition part is definitely fair, but a huge chunk of the yards and 2 TD’s for Young came in the 4th quarter down 3 scores. It’s a different game at that point(and both drives got weak roughing penalties to help). I actually thought they had a few more issues in the run game than they should, but they’ve set the bar high this year. Have to clean up some of the tackling though.
I think they’re probably a middle of the pack D. They can beat up on the bad teams, but will have some issues good offenses here and there.

Statically we have the #1 rushing defense in the NFL
Part of that is our offense has been scoring and making teams pass more
I do think they have been playing more soft and zone keeping things in front of them making teams dink and dunk down the field on long drives. They are not giving up much as far as chunk plays overall.
Am I concerned? A little. I think there is a bit of fools gold, one thing that is better is the pass rush and we have yet to face a real powerhouse offense with a big nasty OL and really good run game.

Actually, I thought our pass rush was underwhelming against Carolina. I haven't seen the official statistics from the game, but I know we only had 1 sack, and it didn't feel like we were getting very much pressure, particularly when we only rushed with our front 4. The blitz packages appeared to open up a lot of the underneath passing lanes. While the blitzes occassionally generated some pressure, there were also many times it was picked up, allowing for easy completions.
The run defense is clearly our strength, which is nice to see. There is nothing more demoralizing than knowing a team is going to run, and still not being able to do anything about it. Just the fact that we shut down Bijon, and no other team they have faced has been able to do so, is a testament to the turn around we have seen there. The run D should only get stronger as Campbell continues to adjust to the speed of the game.
The secondary sure looks a lot different without Branch out there! Unbelievable that a rookie has that kind of impact so soon, but it is pretty clear. Sutton is a rock and a true #1 CB, and Jacobs is solid, but after that it's hit or miss. Was really hoping Emmanuel was gonna be the missing piece.
Fortunately, the defenisve backfield still has time to develop communication and cohesiveness before we get to the toughest part of the schedule.
I’d say the run D is legit, outside of the Carolina game, the run D has been really good all since the second half of last year. The run D being so good is obviously helping the pass D, forcing the opposing offenses into must pass situations on 3rd downs.
They haven't faced a big nasty OL yet, Campbell has really helped bolster the run game but I do not see our DTs as run stuffers vs the better OL's. Hope I am wrong, but the LB core is much improved and really helping the run game.

KC has a good OL, especially the interior.
Good news with what you’re saying, there’s not a lot of big nasty good OL’s in the NFL right now. A lot more bad than good.

It seems like in every game the defense has had lapses in coverage downfield where it appears there is some type of miscommunication and/or a DB or LB out of position.

That happens to every D, especially when you have new guys playing back there every week. Trying to keep them to minimum is key.

Sooo...basically you're saying, they haven't played the 49ers yet...not sure who else you would be talking about....
Goff in his last 7 games has 10 TDs and 13 turnovers.
Defense left some plays on the field last couple weeks. If the offense isn't playing well the defense needs to step up, that hasn't happened eithier. The rough patch we have encountered is definitely a team effort.

But the defense isn't supposed to be good, the offense is. The defense did enough to win in the last 2 losses. The offense has the talent and is not playing up to it and needs to step up.

If you want to go to the playoffs, you need complimentary football. I will say the Lions have won what they have with Goff's turnovers is pretty good considering.
