The candidates I see are Goff , Decker , Iffy and McNeill. Maybe Davis or Barnes also but I feel like the team could survive without them. Goff is going to cost you 40-45 mill a year maybe more. Iffy was ranked as the 9th best safety last year (PFF) and the top safeties are making 15 mill a year. McNeill ranked 8th according to PFF last year top 10 DT was between 20 and 25 mill a year. Decker was ranked 3rd best in the NFL last season according to PFF Top tackles and we see what Sewel just got 28 mill a year. Now I am only using PFF stats as a baseline but to me these guys are the heart of the team. Trying to keep them all would end up 100 to 120 (maybe more) million a year proposition and not doable as I see it so who would you keep? By 2026 Your looking at Kerby Joseph (who was not put up a year close to Iffy last season) and going to have to pick up Hutches 5th year or start working a contact that would be more team friendly than that 5th year or a tag. You looking 265 or 275 million in 2025 probably just under 300 million by 2026 not counting dead money on the books. Not sure 1/3 of the payroll to 4 people and half to 6 people is the way to build a long term team.
To me I see 2 things that are no surprise. The first is draft capitol and drafting well shines bright on how good teams stay good. 2nd thing is how there is not one thing more important that having a QB that can win in not completely ideal situations. I am not sure if Goff can win it all/playoffs on a team like KC had last year or do as well without Ben Johnson. He is good but there are 10 other guys in the NFL I would start my franchise with over him. I trust Brad and Dan because they have given me no reason not to so far but going from the bottom to one championship game in 30 years is really the easy part. You sucked had tons of draft capitol and built a great team that I given them 100% credit for that. To me the real hard part to me is how do you stay in the hunt for a decade plus? How do you have a bad year and bounce back after you have had 5 playoff years in a row? I watched a speedy return to play playoffs for the Rams last year. My favorite GM of all time was Ozzy Newsome. While running the Ravens for 2 decades they never missed the playoff for a 3 year stretch.
The last thing that I to return to is draft capitol , when you look at how deep this draft is compared to the average last decade that 3rd they gave up to move up could be a really good player. Could be a great long term O lineman. That capitol seems in a year like this more valuable. Once again I am ok with Brad , let the man cook as long as the results continue. This is all just bull shiting and things I was talking last night while watching the draft with friends. Cooper DeJean is in the mold of a Brian Branch Hybrid S/CB but is he that much a drop off? Was McKinstry that much a drop , he is an outside guy like Arnold? That 3rd round could have been a Zack Fraizer or a Mike Sanristril or a Benden Rice? I just look at Buffalo trading back and getting 2 more picks in tonight draft and the Lions trade up and give up 2 picks and a 2nd chance at a quality player. On the other hand if I was a Flacons fan after paying Cousion's a TON of money and a lot guaranteed taking a QB at 8 would have had me thinking same old Lions.
I give a ton of credit to Brad trying to fix that broke dick secondary almost at all cost. The Lions where a secondary away from being in a Superbowl in my opinion. I think Arnold was the best plug and play ready corner in the draft so I can not bitch about it if it pays off like it has been the last 3 years.
