With Slay's departure and his napalming the bridge on the way out, the easy assessment is MP is the problem. However, let's explore a few points of view from another lens. We are talking about a team that has not won anything in 63 years. Picture when MP arrives the cultural difference in the locker room as compared to NE. He has been consistent since arrival, finding players with a certain mindset. Since then some team/ fan favorites like Slay, Glover Quin, GT, Quandre Diggs, Ansah etc. have been ejected.
I know some players immediately mutinied and rejected MP citing that MP is terrible to players. My question, from what perspective? I was a Caldwell supporter and was not happy when he was let go. Now, after hearing Slays comments I am reevaluating my opinion. Maybe...just maybe the culture was so engrained that he and BQ knew they had to blow it ALL up? Even if it meant their jobs?
The Lions have a long steeped history of signing their own FA's to contracts above the league average for the position, crippling the team; sometimes because the fans loved the player and they filled seats. That is definitely not how they perform in NE. Look at Belichik dumping Brady this year, hard from a loyalty perspective but the right move for the team.
Lastly, the Lions have had more coaches in the past decade that the Steelers have in their history. Which franchise consistently wins? My point, sometimes you dance with the girl who brought you. Give this duo 5-7 years, let them get "their guys", and manage the cap to eliminate terrible cap restrictive deals (CJ, Suh, Fairly, Staff).
Fixing 63 years of ineptitude surely won't happen overnight. Is he harsh, rude, lacking compassion...yep probably. Is he looking for players with low drama, acceptable salary and out performing their deals...most likely. Look Slay was going into his third contract, the wrong side of 30 and acting like a self centered child. I have been a fan since the early 70's and will continue, I love the Honolulu Blue & Silver and will always follow them. I am also ready for a different approach, even if the coach and GM think differently than we have ever thought in the past.
