IF... the 2019 Detroit Lions had held onto leads in the fourth quarter, instead of being 3-12-1, they'd have been 10-6. by AggravatingElevator0
We all know the Lions had a poor 2019 season. But how bad a team were they really?
The Lions held fourth quarter leads in ten of their games, breaking two end of third-quarter ties with Matt Prater FGs against the Redskins and the Bears. If they hadn't dropped those leads, they'd have been 10-6, knocked Green Bay out of the playoffs, and possibly won the division, going 3-3 (assuming all other things stayed the same, the Vikings were 2-4 in the division at 10-6).
This is including games where they lost Matthew Stafford to back injury - they finished the year #10 in passing offense.
Additionally, in eight of their sixteen games, the Lions held a lead going into the fourth quarter. If games had ended in the third, the lions would have been 8-5-3.
With that, how close do you guys think you are to competing for the NFCN?

I actually think closer than some might think. If their D had been average last season and Stafford did not break his back it surely would have been different. They need a great not good draft. Success would equate to 3 yr one starters and 6 on the 53 man roster. Keep 9 upright and please establish a running game.

Ohhh boy, that sounds like a Reignman challenge. And by that I mean it sounds like this is some misleading propaganda that makes the Lions seem special. I really hate when factoids lack context. What would the records of all the teams been had they not blown 4th quarter leads? Is that the same as asking what the standings would have been had games ended after the 3rd quarter?
I'll do both.
Here's what the standings would have been had the games ended after 3 quarters. Although a bit misleading because some of these teams would have attempted FG's or hail mary's at the end of the 3rd and they known there wasn't going to be a 4th quarter.
4 HOU 7- 7-2 -3 IND 7- 8-1 0 TEN 6- 7-3 -3 JAX 4-11-1 -2
1 KAN 13- 2-1 1 7 DEN 8- 8-0 1 OAK 7- 8-1 0 LOC 5-10-1 0
Whoa, lots of ties xD. 17 wins turn into ties so that's why it looks like most teams have fewer net wins. Detroit would have benefited the most in this alternate reality, but they still finish in last place and miss the playoffs xD.
And what if nobody blew a 4th quarter lead? Here's the standings.
4 IND 10- 6-0 1-4 7 HOU 8- 8-0 3-1 TEN 7- 9-0 2-0 JAX 4-12-0 2-0
2 KAN 12- 4-0 2-2 5 DEN 10- 6-0 1-4 LOC 7- 9-0 0-2 OAK 7- 9-0 2-2
Sorry Detroit, even with the 7 additional wins, you still miss the playoffs lol. Carolina is the only team that didn't win or lose a game in the 4th quarter. Vikings lost to the Bears and Chiefs in the 4th after having a lead, and only beat the Broncos.
