Don't have a problem with the pick itself but really disappointed they didn't trade down. Without the trade down personally I would have rolled the dice on Tua. Hell, take Tua there and maybe Miami panics and gives you the farm on the spot.

U should be the GM. Well said. It's too high a spot to take a cb not named Deon Sanders
I'm pretty happy with this. I think we're really well set up in the secondary now with Okudah, Trufant, Oruwariye and Coleman. If we ever find a pass rush we'll be cooking.

CB is every bit as valuable as DL in today’s league.
And part of the problem with a trade up is judging by how it fell Chargers were either fine with Tua or Herbert or not in on Tua.

1st CB in top 3 since 1997. Here is why, CB takes 2-3 years to adapt, then hit wall at 29. By time he hits his side, he's looking for a new contract (big money) which takes him to the end of shelf life. Lets compare Simmons and Okudah at year five.

The last 2 CB’s that were taken in top 5 were Pro Bowlers or All-Pros in year 1 or 2.
Also not sure where you’re getting the hit a wall at 29 thing. And ignoring that, Okudah will already be on his second contract by the time he’s 29, so if he’s good you’d have gotten 7-8 seasons out of him already.
As much as a I like Simmons, where is the example of a hybrid S/LB going top 5?

Name a dominate CB in their 30's.
Richard Sherman Casey Hayward Joe Haden
This is leaving out 2 guys at the top of their game that will be 30 at the start of the season in Patrick Peterson and Stephon Gilmore.
Those are just guys currently in the league that are good to very good CB’s. Not even looking historically.
Also, why do we need to get 10+ years of high level production out of a player for it to be a good pick? That is incredibly rare. If Okudah gives 7-8 years of good quality CB play to the Lions, it’s an easy win.
Also, name me any position besides that has lots of guys playing at high level in their 30’s.

Miami and LA Chargers basically didn't even bother to offer the Lions anything...because they knew that neither the Lions or Giants would ever take either QB that were drafted. Just like I predicted, they both just sat there and took the players that dropped to them.
Okudah will be all pro, somewhere else. He will leave when his rookie contract is done of not traded before. No DL = nightmare for our DBs. Slay has to be happy as hell he was traded.
Our DL and LBs were bigger weaknesses. Taking Okudah was retarded as hell.
There are quite a few dline left. If they don't take dline tomorrow then maybe you have a bitch
Last year proved having a top 5 corner is meaningless if your DL sucks. Brown or Simmons made a hell of a lot more sense than Okudah. Totally different level of talent after top 10. Stupid fucking move drafting Okudah. TOTALLY
I'm fine with Okudah. I was not a Derrick Brown guy - the drills at combine show that he is Danny Shelton 2.0, a run stuffer that can't get after the QB. It sounds like no one ever made an offer. If Tua didn't have injury history, they would have been able to get a trade done. I agree with who said it above - the Dolphins and Chargers KNEW the Lions and Giants had their QB. For those of you saying "Take TUA", the #3 pick with that injury history so the "Lions finally take a chance". No thanks.
The shock to me is Green Bay taking Jordan Love. Not the fact they took him, but they TRADED UP for him. Last time I checked, you can't play 2 QBs and Rodgers has no receivers and the defense is still really shaky. The offensive line has lost people and they need to restock some of those things.
Remember this as well, the Lions still have about 22M in cap space as well (29 less the 7M for rookies). Do they have trade options tonight in the 3rd round with 2 picks and pick up a veteran?
The point is, we had a chance to take a top tier QB with that spot. Stafford has how many years left? 1? 2? Look at what GB did. Just like when they took Aaron Rodgers #24 when Brett Farve was heading out, we could have taken Tua or Herbert and even gotten a trade down. See, Quinn should have sold the pick like we were taking a QB. This would have caused someone to come up, but my feeling about Quinn's biz sense is more like him telling the other teams that we weren't taking a QB, so why would anyone give up a pick? It was a good spot to get the next guy after Stafford, now we have a talented CB, but a rookie with growing pains...idk man
