I just watched Bob Quinn's post draft Zoom call with Detroit area reporters. On a human level, I applaud BQ's transparency regarding work life balance. He opened up sharing how special it was to have his family and how his kids help with updating the big board in his home office. He even provided a tutorial on the economics of UDFA to them. As fans we often are highly critical of sports figures, or conversely elevate them above humanity. Both of which are elevated responses to people trying to do a job. He also pointed out his kids are criticized at school after poor games.
Now to the football side. He provided a view into the modified offseason workouts and rookie camps with social distancing in place. There will be virtual classrooms and individual workouts in place. Though he didn't elaborate much beyond this, its abundantly clear that if there is a season in 2020, it will be like no other in history. Will they sequester players and play in empty stadiums? If yes, how does that work for the players, and coaches families?
Unprecedented times for sure, but this interview really provided an interesting look into their lives and how COVID-19 has no boundaries.
Not COVID-19 related, I read the morning the typical June 1st cut provision is not in play in 2020. This is "because that provision is not included in this tenth and final year of the current collective bargaining agreement. So, unless the NFL and NFLPA quickly agree to a new CBA, teams won’t be able to kick the can down the road when they release veterans." So NFL teams will have a different approach to aging veterans with big cap numbers, the article further cited the following example, "The lack of a post-June 1 cut will be felt by every team in the league and could impact the futures of many notable players. Corry points to Eagles wide receiver Alshon Jeffery as a prime example – under the post-June 1 rules, the $26.1M in dead money that would result from a Jeffery release could be split between the 2020 and 2021 cap. Without that luxury, the Eagles would have to eat all of that dead money this year. So, unless the Eagles are extraordinarily desperate to get rid of Jeffery, they’re unlikely to cut him."
Last, UDFA signings have already added some intrigue for the Lions, signing a highly ranked Washington TE Hunter Bryant. The Lions also signed Steven Wirtel, LS, Iowa State, who could be the person to finally unseat Don "freakin" Muhlbach 16 -yr fixture for the Lions, who also signed as UDFA in 2004. To put Muhlbach's career length into perspective, his rookie season featured a quick 4-2 start under Steve Mariucci, only to crash land at 6-10, finishing 2-8 down the stretch. With Joey Harrington at the helm, and undying cries for Mike McMahon to replace Mr. Champagne & Strawberries.
Is the 2020 offseason actually the 2020-21 offseason? What about CFB, how can they play a season with distance measures and school? Does that mean there is no draft in 2021? Really interesting times.
I truly applaud the NFL for using technology to keep the draft going. It gave fans a three day break from this craziness. We were able to have a unique view into NFL coaches and GM's homes (literally & figuratively). The NFL flexed it's presence to raise over $100 million dollars for COVID-19 relief, which I am happy to have donated.
Stay well my friends, enjoy your family time and lets keep positive for better times ahead. Forward Down the Field.....Goooooo Lions!!!
