Okay, obviously our Vikes have been close - several times - and always find a way to blow it (thanks, Vikes!), but what about your Lions? I've been meaning to ask, what Lions team do you guys feel had the most potential to go all the way? What happened instead?
I've been meaning to ask this question for a while, but this article reminded me. It explores the 10 most dominant teams in Detroit sports history. Guess how many Lions teams were on the list?
Anyway, here it is:
The Athletic: The 10 most dominant teams in Detroit sports history since 1970
> 1973 Michigan football > 1978-79 Michigan State basketball > 1984 Tigers > The “Bad Boys” Pistons > 1988-89 Michigan basketball > 1995-1998 Red Wings > 1997 Michigan football > 1999-2000 Michigan State basketball > 2001-02 Red Wings > The “Goin’ to Work” Pistons
Honorable mentions
Our two most difficult omissions were the 2013 Michigan State football team and the 2007-08 Red Wings. MSU’s 2013 squad dropped a game at Notre Dame in September but rattled off 10 straight wins to wrap an unforgettable Rose Bowl/Big Ten title season, the last before the playoffs began. The 2007-08 Red Wings won the franchise’s most recent Stanley Cup on the back of a powerful 54-win regular season.
Other notables included (but were not limited to) the 1976-77 Michigan basketball and the 1980 Michigan football teams, and the 1987 and 2006 Tigers. Give us your thoughts in the comments below.
