Darius Slay confirms the Lions defense never concealed its coverage schemes

Remember how the Lions offense under Jim Bob Cooter was so predictable that opposing defenses were calling out the plays before QB Matthew Stafford could even get the snap from center? In 2019, that ugly shoe was on Detroit’s defensive foot.



In an extensive breakdown with NFL.com analyst Brian Baldinger, Green Bay Packers wideout Davante Adams declared that he knew whether the Lions defense was going to be in a zone or man coverage from simply watching what cornerback Darius Slay did pre-snap. If Slay traveled with Adams on his motion, he knew the Lions were playing man. If Slay stayed put, it was a zone.



Packers-based writer Peter Bukowski summarized the thought succinctly with a tweet,

Our take



This isn’t exactly a surprising revelation, nor is it necessarily some flaming indictment of the Lions scheme or coaching staff. It’s really not that uncommon around the league; that’s why teams use motion pre-snap — and why Cooter’s offense that used motion less than any other was so predictable.



It’s worth noting that Adams did not play in the first Lions-Packers game in 2019 and that Aaron Rodgers had two of his four worst games of the season while playing Detroit, including a 27-for-55 effort in the finale that stands as the most incompletions Rodgers has ever thrown in a game.



Does that mean the Lions should not do more to mix things up and conceal what they’re doing? Of course not. Deception is always preferable if the defenders are capable of pulling it off. But execution matters much more, and that’s an area where the Lions defense must shore up before even thinking about creating exotic facades.

This isn’t anything new or surprising.

Also it doesn’t matter how you disguise coverage if the QB has time to go through his progressions 3 times.

If anything it just accentuates Patricia's stubbornness for not adjusting his scheme based on the players he had.

I don’t know. I think there’s benefits to disguising coverages, especially against young QB’s, but most QB’s will be able to identify it and will use motion to help make the D declare or give a tell.

And in reality with no pass rush and the issues with coverage from LB’s, you’re not getting much anyway.

I don't know, I guess I feel like if you don't have much talent on defense, that is one situation where disguising coverages might help mask that lack of talent. But you're more of an X's & O's guy than I am so I'll take your word for it.

You can, but disguise or no disguise, the real issue is the lack of rush up front. Even if you’re selling man and you’re disguising zone, if the QB sits in the pocket day, it doesn’t matter. There’s also the argument for using less disguise in hopes of catching the offense off guard. Just don’t see it as a big issue, good QB’s know how to read it and if they can’t they’ll use motion to get the hand tipped. Most QB’s won’t snap the ball without a high level of confidence in the coverage they see.

If anything, I’d like to see more creativity and curveballs up front. Hopefully with some of the additions help that and hopefully Undlin is able to shake at least a couple things up.

Execution wins. No pass rush, no LB’s that can cover, and none of it matters in back end. Until they can get those 2 things improved, teams are just going to kill them with under routes anyway. Lions had a great cover guy, but no one in todays league can cover on the back end of that shit D last year.
