I hate to say it but it's the best move. He had some fumbles and while good around the goal line. Craig Reynolds could fill in there. I like the guy but he is just an average back. Get something for him while we can...?
well now the lions dont have a goal line RB. swift will get hurt tying his sholeaces and miss half the season. so unless they plan on using a lineman as a goal line RB we have another hole.

Montgomery has 26 career TD’s and Williams 30, which more than half came last year. Neither guy is busting out long TD runs. Montgomery can handle goal line.
Surprised to not see anyone more bummed about this. Heck, I'm bummed. He seemed to be a fan favorite, and someone who legitimately wanted to be there. Took pride in it. I was hoping he'd be brought back and would be part of the long-overdue success that is coming your way.

I definitely wanted him back and will miss him, but I get it too. He has a lot of interest and Lions didn’t want to wait around and possibly lose out on Montgomery, who they obviously like. I’d have been more willing to wait and then looked elsewhere and in the draft if it didn’t work out, but what they did makes some sense too.

It's business and Jamaal is getting his. Lions didn't want to overpay. And based on what they gave Montgomery, I think Jamaal wants something north of $20 million with a lot of guarantees. He was a fun player to have around and had a get year for an otherwise career average back.
Bears fans seemed to love Montgomery's work ethic and leadership. Not a speedster but solid overall and good at breaking tackles. Only 25, I like this swap out. I know Lions fans are upset but this move made the team better

meh....i liked his personality, but other than being an effort guy, he wasnt anything special.
As far as wanting to be here, it sounds like a big contract is more important to him right now if reports are to be believed. And fair enough, no hard feelings. Lions have shown they are shrewd and the team is the bottom line...too expensive? Cool, just signed your replacement. Dont want to be here? Cool, traded or cut. You want top dollar, cool, we are bargain shopping for team players...im diggin this regime
Well Saints paid Williams less than we paid Montgomery. so not sure we did the right thing. williams got 12 mil 3 year deal 9 guaranteed. montgomery fot 18 mil 11 guaranteed.

Agree. Will miss his personality, but the reality is he's pretty much JAG on the field (maybe slightly above), but Montgomery is better and younger. You also don't want to pay for last year's production. He won't get half the TDs he got in 2022.
The Lions feel Montgomery is a significant upgrade. Watching film he looks better and is also multidimensional and can be used in the pass game. Their style seems more similar than different in film.
From my understanding talking to a source, Jamaal Williams was given a deadline of when to come to a decision before the new league year. When it became apparent it wouldn’t be the same process as John Cominsky (Quick) Brad Holmes and the Lions went on the process to replace Williams.
The one thing that was told to me, and was the main point of why they acted quickly into running back, “We didn’t want to be left with leftovers, and sometimes you have to make calculated decisions that aren’t easy, but necessary”

In all seriousness, it is encouraging to know this is their thought process.
