What is the point, maybe should have drafter another DT here instead.
Well, maybe worst case is you have a solid, cheap backup with a chance to develop into a franchise quarterback. When was the last time this team had that?
Someday you all will realize Goff is their guy...not sure why yall are sticking your heads in the sand on this...
I've said along I think he will be...I just don't agree with it. Although there is a part of me that thinks he completely shits the bed this season.
The offense has been improved essentially at every position Group One could say WR is a wash ..but the OL and RB rooms look to be improved. The Lions needed to do more on defense in the draft, bit if they get that offense firing, Goff would have to have a complete meltdown. One thing I think is great aboit him is he is very resilient and what makes him special his not his physical abilities, but how he approaches the game and pressure mentally. I think he is in a great situation here and has a lot more support versus how McVey treated him. He has done enough for me last season to get behind him. I'd take him any day compared to Stafford.

So if you give Goff $40M+ per year, how you gonna pay guys like Sewell, Jackson, St. Brown, etc? In other words the guys that are integral to him succeeding. Not to mention what they won't be able to afford on the other side of the ball. Goff has shown throughout his entire career without a supporting cast he's nothing special. At $40M+ he needs to be Allen/Burrow/Herbert level, which I don't see all of a sudden happening at this stage of his career.
As I've said, I have no problem with Goff as the starter this year, and probably even next year if he plays the way he did down the stretch last season. But giving him a mega-extension would be such a huge mistake and tell me it really is the "SOL" and nothing has changed.
In this offense by next year Hooker will probably be able to do what Goff is doing (with an added bonus of being mobile and being able to throw a spiral). If Goff wants to stick around as a backup and take backup money, he's more than welcome to.
40-45 mil per isn't a mega deal...60 mil is...40-45 is the going rate now...unless your plan is to draft a new qb every 5 yrs so they are always on a rookie deal, you need to reevaluate how you think teams are built...
Top 6 paid in NFL are 45M and above, that is still a lot of money
Anything in the 30's is a win
My guess is they will keep Goff unless he craps the bed, and re-sign Hooker end of next year with a nice bump, but paying him back up money. Then they can roll with Hooker at a discount.

You are not getting Goff in the 30’s. Not a chance.
The Carr and Jones contracts are the starting points for Lions and I’d guess his agent will be starting closer to 50. Think Felix is right with around 45. Something like 4/180 with probably 110-120 guaranteed. They can leave themselves some flexibility if they get creative with the structure.
They’re in a tough spot because they can probably get something more favorable done now, but if he is first 6-7 games of the season Goff this year, then you’re in deep shit. Then again if he’s something closer to last 10 games of the season…that 50 number is probably more likely.

51 a year is top right now
so 45 is crazy, unless he completely lights it up this year I do not see the Lions doing that

45 would have him as the 6-7 highest paid for AAV, that’s probably actually 7-8 because Lamar’s details haven’t been released yet. Most of the guys he’d be above are guys like Carr or Jones that he could argue he’s better than or Stafford and Dak who have dated contracts.
Why would he sign an extension for less money than guys like Dak, Stafford, Daniel Jones?

Not really, because SOL has always been rebuilding, and never a "win now" philosophy. At least not one with an actual plan of succeeding.
We have a short window with this group of offensive linemen, this Quarterback and O-coordinator. Things may go South but at least we would have had this opportunity to see a winning team go as far as it can go.

In 2020, Ryan Tannehill had 33 TDs, 7 INTs, a higher YPA and completion percentage than Goff in 2022 and a top 5 offense. Tennessee gave Tannehill an extension after that year and in 2023 he has the 2nd highest cap hit after Patrick Mahomes. Tannehill was older than Goff is now, but I think it's a cautionary tale. There are countless examples of "middle of the road" QBs getting that 2nd or 3rd contract and it ending up backfiring. Goff will be no different.

Yeah, this is my fear. Goff can be a good QB and help give you a competitive team, but getting to that ceiling is hard because of what you have to surround him with and it gets more difficult to do that once you pay him.
Holmes has said he has reached out to his agent. I think he will try to get ahead of a hue deal and offer something now in the 30's with big incentives for playoff wins. I don't see that Holmes has any other choice. If he doesn't try to offer something soon and Goff has another really good year it can get pricey.
