S.M.A.R.T.A.S.S. for short.
Or how bout, Someone Hopefully Appreciates Reigns Team Average Stat System? ... no wait.
Waaaaasup Lions fans, long time. Well boys and girls, it's still the dead offseason, so let me see if I can explain the madness with this one. It looks at the offensive/defensive strength of a team in a "strength of schedule" sorta way, but instead of wins, it's about yards. Teams aren't just ranked by how many yards they've accumulated, but instead, the offensive and defensive strength of your opponents are factored into the equation. Is the 5th ranked offense actually better than the 10th ranked offense if it played a much easier defensive schedule? Maybe? This attempts to address that problem.
First, let me use the Lions game against Jacksonville as an example to explain how the sausage is made ... The Jaguars defense gave up an average of 348 yards per game (not including this game), and the Lions offense racked up 437 total yards against them, giving the Lions offense a net of +89 yards (or S.M.A.R.T.A.S.S. points) for this one game. The Jaguars offense gained an average of 363 yards per game (not including this game), but in this one they only gained 266 yards against the Lions defense, giving the Lions defense a net -97 yards for the game (negative is better on defense), or a net total of net +186 for the game (offense and defense combined). It's more important that you beat an opponents average than how many yards were gained or prevented in this system. Ha! See that part is different from what I posted on the Bears board.
I then tally up all the games and divide by the number of games played to get a season/game average. The NFL hasn't always played a 17 game schedule, and the game has evolved a bit over the past 6 decades, so then I normalized the results allowing for the ranking and comparison of teams from any and all eras, head to head, no matter how many games they played. That's what the historical ranks are all about at the bottom of the chart. This particular project just focuses on total yards, but I can also compare/rank teams by points, passing, and rushing.
Having said all that, here are the 2022 Lions game by game results.
Any questions xD?
Here's the ugly legend explaining what all that means, or do the spoiler tags work? I should probably know that, I set it up.
And if you plot all the 2022 teams on a graph by their offensive and defensive averages (ghosted helmets = last years results):
You guys came up short in 2022 but finished strong and knocked the Packers out, which the rest of the North appreciated haha. And I'm sure you guys can't wait for the 2023 season to find out if that finish was for real or not. You haven't had many "great" seasons in recent memory, so I chose to include your only NFCCG appearance in 1991. Which I still remember. Wow, the Redskins really had your number that year huh? At least you owned the Cowboys and the Central xD. That was also the last year any Minnesota team enjoyed a championship, when the Twins won the World Series. At least you guys have the Red Wings and Pistons. And lets face it, the AL Central is nothing but a 4A farm system in MLB these days so who cares about baseball?
Looking at the Lions S.M.A.R.T.A.S.S. results though, I can't figure out how they won 12 games in 1991 xD. The chart starts out leaning left in a good way, but after the bye things start to go "right" in a bad way. It's like the '91 Lions were drunk or something . I'll have to get around to doing some of the teams from the 60's. You had some good S.M.A.R.T.A.S.S. teams back then, like in '62. Sorry I didn't do anything prior to 1960 so the championship teams are out of this project.
As a bonus, I'm including the 2022 S.M.A.R.T.A.S.S. Chiefs for everyone, because it's one of the only other ones I've created so far xD. Meant to humble us all.
Let me know if you're interested in seeing any of the other 1800 teams going back to 1960 and I'll see which ones I can get to. The graphics take a little while to make so I'll get to as many as I can, or I can always just post the numbers too. I've seen all the data and there are some surprises in there. 2000 Ravens defense? Not as impressive when you consider the pathetic offenses they faced that year xD.
Feel free to visit the other boards to see some of their results ... and read most of this post again haha. Checkout those fraudulent Vikings, or '85 Bears. And if you're not aware, these are all proboards boards, so your account here can be used to sign on any of the others too. You'll have to "create it" on each board first, but that's how it works if I remember correctly, or just visit as a guest. The cross traffic helps all of us in the analytics department anyway xD. The real reason behind this entire thing muahahaha.
