that's about the most accurate, succinct description I've seen...but I'd add decker getting wurq'd to it to make it complete
And let's be honest here. Penei Sewell has been kinda' coasting and doesn't have the killer instinct to be the best tackle in the NFL, which he is capable of. I'll give Decker a pass because he's not really that talented to being with.
I'd listen harder if sewell just gave up 3 sacks in a game...

I think lack of consistent pass rush is a bigger issue than either of those things. And isn't Rusty the one that said Jonah Jackson is JAG? Let's not forget with Jackson and Vaitai out they're already at 3rd string guard and with Sorsdal getting benched they're at 4th string. No team in the NFL has even a serviceable 3rd or 4th string OG.
lol.
Points heard and not completely disagreeing...but 3 sacks given up is a pretty big deal.. as is no pass rush..to be fair tho, this is where I bring in refs...I've seen some stupid obvious holds not called in the lions favor...its almost ridiculous like they don't want the lions to have a pass rush (yey...(read: this year))

And what I mean by that is...who are the big names (eh hem, marketble) on the dline outside hutch? McNeil isn't a household name...who else has any swag? Nfl is a business, there is no marketable dlinemen, so why would they give them flags?
I'm not ready to say the nfl is scripted, but I do think there is some fixing/preferential treatment going on...I thought nfl stood alone from NBA and MLB in that aspect, but now I just think they were the last to fall...

But still not a rookie recently converted from Tackle.
Yes, we're thin, but were also a little too reliant on injured guys at both positions. Evan Brown and Mike Hughes might not have been terrible signings, but I get it. Youth movement. Future.
This one always gets me. At 17:31, Lions war room after Christian Gonzalez went off the board. Notice how there's no celebration over Jack Campbell not being selected. The deflation in the room says it all.

Lions were way over confident going into this game and the result was that the Lions played and coached like dog shit.
They lost because they're thin (and not very talented) at OG and CB. And they attacked and exploited those weaknesses.
They could have still won despite having a weak OG and CB. Every team has holes! With the players they have right now, they can be a super bowl contender but they they can't afford to have a bad game on the offensive side of the ball.

I still think they are a year away but contender is fair...they would need some late injuries to the opponents and some late cohesion ro be a legit sb contender...but in year 3 of a shit storm' being the 3rd or 4th best team in the conference is acceptable progress

Agree. This team is way farther along than any of us thought it would be 3 seasons ago. Still probably a year away and I have confidence Holmes will address the defense in the off season. My biggest concern about the long-term future of this team is probably Goff. I really hope Hooker is the guy.
The problem is Goff doesn’t struggle with pressure, it seems to break him. Hes not always gonna be clean back there and it’s gonna get rough, can’t have multiple turnovers and throw ducks. He’s also responsible for some of the pressure because he tends to hold the ball too long at times.
The knock on Goff was always that everything had to be just right for him to succeed. He had done a good job of changing that, but today that kind of came back. It looked like it was there last week, but I was impressed with the way he bounced back. Today, he didn’t, he had a bad day.
So serious question...is that a guy you want to have $40M-$50M against your cap the next 4-5 years?

cap is over 200 mil now...and going up...what if it was 40 mil max?

I might be okay with it for one year but honestly I think I'd rather roll the dice on Hooker with the 3rd round rookie contract. If you have Goff with $40M against the cap, how you gonna keep Jonah, Sewell, St. Brown, Decker, etc going forward? That's the irony. Goff needs all of those pieces to succeed, but if they extend him they won't be able to afford to keep the pieces that put him in the position to succeed.

the irony is not lost on me...and I doubt Brad holmes...
A. Jonah is gone...you can take someone in the 2-3 round that gives you more, at this point. Decker has what, 2- 3 more yes? Sewell, 2? B. But maybe Goff goes for a 3-4 yr, front heavy deal where lions can get out in 2? I'm sure there is some acknowledgement on his part that they saved his career and he is toast anywhere else. He'll, a conspiracy part of me thinks he's tanking so his agent doesn't act stupid on his negotiations...but we really only need him 2 more yrs...1 with hooker actually practicing to evaluate 1 more for actual certainty

Goff is signed through 2024 (with a $32M cap hit in 2024). Why not just let him ride that out, and by then hopefully you know what you have in Hooker. And if you sense Hooker is not the heir apparent, franchise Goff until you figure it out. But I do agree Goff should be sucking Brad Holmes' dick but the the reality is his agent won't agree.
it's a fair discussion in many aspects...im not saying, oh these 2 games, he's a bum...im simply asking, do you extend him for , idk, 4-5 yrs at $45-50 mil per or do you roll the dice on hooker on a rookie contract and max out the team? I honestly don't know the answer, but I do think it's a legit discussion.

Rolling the dice on the injured rookie ... would be a very Brad Holmes thing to do.
But realistically, it's Goff or die. We have no other options at this point.
