Again. They didn’t have to sell that they were going to move on from Stafford. They just had to sell that someone else wanted to come up and get a QB.
Not only that, but it wouldn't have been out of the realm of possibility for the Lions to draft a QB and still not move on from Stafford in the next 2 years.
I think, in typical Ford ownership fashion, Martha screwed us by publicly stating the current regime was under a "win or else" mandate. This gave every team in the league the knowledge that this GM and coach were not going to be able to build for the future, completely removing the possibility of even considering taking their next franchise QB at no. 3. Quinn then doubled down on this while trying to pander to Stafford's ego.
This is just another example of ineptitude at every level of this organization. Everyone says GB's draft sucked, but they weren't afraid to draft a replacement for their franchise QB while he is still playing well. They draft with a look to the future, while Detroit always seems to be drafting to fill current glaring holes that are the result of drafting (poorly) to fill holes two, three and four years ago. Which recipe has led to more success??

If you believed anything Martha said, you are not very smart. Sure, if they go 3-13 this season, then they can easily cut ties. But if they improve in anyway they can just look at it as improvement. If you don't think that the reason they kept these guys is they didn't want to fork over their salaries for them to leave, then you are not paying attention.
I still love that people thought the Lions could get anything for the #3 OA....you guys are cute...

why would you move on from a franchise QB in his prime? That makes no sense...
Pander to Staffords ego? What?
You realize Rogers is 36, right? You realize Love is a project, right? Why would Lions take a play now QB to sit for 2 years behind a 31 yr old?

Stafford's contract is up in 2 years. If he plays the next 2 years like he has played most of his 11 year career, why would you want to pay him what will probably need to be the #1 QB salary for a guy that will be 34 (he's actually 32 not 31)?
I still get why you wouldn't do it, and of course Quinntricia couldn't do it because they need to win now or they won't be here when the next guy starts anyway. But just me, as a long suffering Lions fan that knows we won't see a Superbowl with the current state of affairs, I would have just rolled the dice on Tua.

The change for the sake of change...meh...would you have rolled the dice on Herbert?
I can't be mad, got some good players in the second and third so far.
Swift looks pretty good. Everything you wanted George Winn to be and more
One of the great injustices in American sports. A man of bruising talent never afforded the opportunity to shine. And such is life. Ok, I am done with the George Winn thing. You just buried it lol
Probably not. I don't think his ceiling is high enough to take a chance like that. Of course his floor is probably higher than Tua's. Tua's injury history does scare the crap out of me.
The good news is we might be in the running for Trevor Lawrence next year.

They have to use around 13 million of that 30 on draft picks. Also need room for Golladay if they give him a new deal because his hit is non-existent at this point. Historically they’ve liked to have 10-15 million for in season, too.
Good point. All that shit said, I would post a link to Swift's highlights, but most of us have seen them already. Mr. Swift from GEORGIA btw, Stafford connection, has some moves and looks tough. His style maybe comparable to a bulkier Marshal Faulk, from the highlights and NO I am not comparing him at all at this point to The Aztecs legend but his style is reminiscent is all I am saying. Don't roast for that comment. So in summation, he might be fun to watch and TY Johnson will be a 3rd stringer for like Houston or something.
10-69 against over .500 teams 0 division titles 0 Playoff wins
only QB in the last 20 season to be on his team 10 or more seasons and have less than 4 playoff wins and a losing record.
Most of us have been here the whole time. We know the stats. Many of us are also capable of seeing that this is a result of a really good QB playing on a pretty bad team. I feel like Tech is farming out his Stafford vomit.
I asked God for a bike, but God doesn't work that way. So I stole a bike, and asked God for forgiveness.

I do wonder...what will Stafford's legacy be for non-Lions fans who always put him on a pedestal? I can't help but think back to that Deadspin column from a couple years ago when they said Stafford's legacy will be "Oh yeah, that guy was here for a while and put up some numbers." I feel like that's dead-on.
Stafford isn't a bad QB. But I don't know how even the Stafford Fanboys can say he's lived up to his huge cap hit numbers over his entire career. He's been on some bad teams, but you can't say he never had support around him. He had arguably one of the best WRs of all time for 7 years of his career and the team has spent lots of resources (money and draft picks) on offense during his tenure here. Even when Calvin was there he had players like Reggie Bush, Burleson, Tate and Riddick so it's not like it was just him. Then all the high draft picks and free agent money spent up front on guys like Decker, Lang, Wagner, Tomlinson, Reiff. And let's not talk about the TEs. I know there is a lot of blame to go around, particularly with having guys like Mayhew and Quinn as the GMs during his tenure, but at what point do you at least place some of the blame on the QB? Unfortunately Stafford's window was probably 2014 when Detroit had an amazing defense and Stafford was pretty run of the mill even with some good offensive weapons. Even Joe Flacco in 2012 with a pretty equivalent defense and less talent on offense than Stafford had carried his team on his back to a playoff berth and Superbowl championship. I also don't like the argument that a lot of people bring up about 2016 and how Stafford had all those 4th quarter comebacks. That year Stafford was a big reason reason they were behind in the 4th quarter a lot - he would play like shit for 3 quarters and then wake up in the 4th. I think Stafford could win a Superbowl, but he would need an Eli Manning type situation where everything falls perfectly into place. And with this current regime, I just don't see that happening.

Some of this is true, some of it is not.
Example 2016. The 4th quarter was statistically Stafford’s worst quarter, so the argument that those come backs were due to him sucking for for the first 3 is pretty weak.

Is that based on the season as a whole or just the 8 comeback wins? I know we've had this discussion before though and I'm pretty sure me or someone broke it down and found that he just played really bad early in the 4th quarter. I also remember looking into just the 8 comeback wins and excluding all the other games and the numbers were different, and also in at least a few of them Stafford actually didn't do all that much even late in the 4th quarter - he just got them close enough for Prater to kick a long FG (which shouldn't be downplayed, but I only mention it because that could explain some of the 4th quarter stats).

His lowest QB rating was in 4th quarter. Lowest A/YA, most interceptions. Overall he was better in the first half than in the second half. His yardage was high in 4th and second most TD’s came in 4th, but overall statistically his worst quarter.
Honestly though, he was fairly consistent from quarter 1 to 4 in ‘16 for most part. Biggest swing came in attempts in 1st and 3rd, which I’m sure came in part because they tried to establish the run with the horrid run game they had.
Stafford was good in ‘16. He’s generally been good most of his career here. Can argue about some bad spots and whether he’s earned every dollar, but he’s just not high on the list of problems this team has had over the last 10 years.
Hate it that Matthew is a great QB but just never got to thrive in a winning team. As sounds like a great guy. But hate that a great QB never got on a winning team.

Agree. Stafford would have won a SB already with half the other teams in the league.
