Then you draft one in the first round next year, or maybe 2nd round.
This article talks about the success of QB from the stand point of where they are drafted. Now their measure of success is basically the ability of a player to be a multi-year starter in the league.
Looking at the name in the later rounds....yikes, not much really talent if you ask me.
All the more reason to at least consider taking one early this year. But yes, only if there is someone you covet. Is next year looking any better for QBs?
I think so, but it’s way early.
Can always wait for Trevor Lawrence and go all in.
Well, there goes that theory. I do think Savage and Cook are simply camp arms and I would like to see them target a QB later in the draft like Stick. If you aren't taking one early then roll the dice late. I was totally against us taking Rudock at all because he doesn't have a strong arm and hit his ceiling in college. Kaaya seemed like a decent option and was also taken in the 6th but has bounced through a handful of organizations and like Rudock is lucky to be on any teams roster. I have seen Stick recently rise to where one site that I like has him as a 4th-5th round pick and I do think we would be better off looking at players who have dropped that fit actual needs. If Stick is gone before the 6th I would pass all the way to our 2nd 7th round pick and look at Taryn Christion from South Dakota State. He also brings speed to the position and I would really like to see what a guy with mobility could do behind our OL.
Yeah I don't know. I suppose Tua would be the #1 QB this year, but after that it gets sketchy, much like the guys this year.
Herbert would probably be in discussion as top guy too. Then you have Fromm, Eason from Washington who transferred because of Fromm and the kid from Stanford.
Think there’s a lot more potential in next years group.

Last year 4 QB's went in the top 10, I doubt that we will be picking in the top 10 next year. 5 were taken in the first round, but the 5th QB wasn't taken until the 32nd pick. Our best hope will be to trade up or settle for the 4th or 5th best QB in the 2020 draft. The same would apply for the 2021 draft obviously but if we take one in 2021 it will be trial by fire as that's when it makes the most sense financially to let Matt go. With the increases in QB salaries we'll see if 1, we have the money to keep Matt, and 2, is he excelling with the new OC and players he has been surrounded with. Right now I wouldn't hold my breath.
Pretty interesting, thanks for posting. I think the most interesting thing about it might be how many WRs Tampa has brought in compared to everyone else. I would trade our WRs for theirs.

4 in top 10 isn’t normal, 4 in the first round period isn’t that common. And honestly if Lions are truly considering replacing Stafford with a 1st next year, he has had another year similar to 2018 and Lions are likely in the top 10 again.
There will be 4 next year and I don't even care who the underclassmen are that come out. There have been 4 average in the top 40 for the last 5 years, and you will be following an average to below average class of QB's next year. In 2018 you took away Staffords best WR and the only legitimate TE that the team had. He lost his best RB for how many games? We have some depth now. The D has already added some pieces that should produce immediate help. If Stafford and the team don't do better than 6 wins we're more than a QB away from improving.

There’s been 4 QB’s taken in the top 40 twice since 2013. Last year and 2014. Not saying it could happen, but last year was more of an outlier.
And the 6 win thing is more to my point. I don’t see them being a 6 win team, so I don’t see them moving on from Stafford. And if they are, they’re likely blowing it all up and starting over.

I think the class next year is better than this year, but another year in college could change all our minds.
Getting a draft pick for a player you know will not be back next year, why is that bad? Other than Ebron getting TDs because Indy had no injured WRs all year, he wasn't any different than he was here (average receiving TE and horrible blocker).

draft and trade article about Lions from the free press
Q. White, Sweat, Gary, Oliver, Ferrell... (rank) them in order I have them on (your) board... and also rank them in terms of likelihood the lions draft each in Round 1? — @chen313
A. After talking to NFL scouts about those prospects the last couple months, I'd rank them Devin White, Ed Oliver, Rashan Gary, Montez Sweat and Clelin Ferrell, and I think they come off the board in close to that order. I don't know Sweat's medicals — he reportedly had a heart condition that was identified at the combine, but wasn't sent home like Maurice Hurst before his draft-day plummet last year — so I don't know how the Lions will value him.
White and Oliver are pretty clean prospects and should go in the top 10, Gary and Sweat have huge upsides but questions about their production (in Gary's case) and off the field (in Sweat's). Ferrell is another clean prospect who might fit the Lions better than, say, Gary, though his upside isn't nearly as high.
This is the only thing that really caught my eye. I think out of those players, Devin White would be my pick if he was there. But I would go White, Sweat, Oliver, Ferrell, Gary in that order. I don't get why people are that high on Gary. And I hope they don't draft him unless it is a major trade down scenario. And speaking of that, I don't believe the Lions will be able to trade down. And if they somehow do move down, anything less than top upper half pick in the 2nd round would be a huge disappointment.

Daniel Jeremiah’s latest mock has Lions taking Jonah Williams. I don’t m or why but I see this as a real possibility.
I don't see why any position is out of the question in this draft for the Lions as long as you get a great prospect. Ideally a trade down would be great, but I think they will remain at #8 and pick.
Outside of a STer, the only thing that would give me pause at #8 is a RB and I think their are some good WRs but nothing worth #8 as a prospect.

I can see the logic and I do like Williams, but I’d have some concern with 3 OL in 1st out of 4 years plus a high priced FA vs results. You’d need a top 5 at worst OL group to justify that kind of investment. I’m also not sure that a top 5 OL is that much better for success than a middle of the pack.
Then while I like Williams you have to take into play you’re taking him top 10(15 if a trade down), to play a position there’s no film on. I’d imagine could be thoughts of moving him to RT next year and let Wagner go. Still a lot of projection.

I was about to post pretty much the same thing. I think Williams is the safest player in the draft. I could get on board with playing him at guard for a year and then take over for Wagner in 2020. He would also give depth if Decker or Wagner get hurt this year (and let's face it, chances are at least one of them will). But yeah, "3 OL in 1st out of 4 years plus a high priced FA vs results."

I guess I could buy into it more if they dropped 5-6 spots and picked up an extra 2nd. Though I’m not sure Williams would make it there. Dropping and grabbing a guy like Bradbury or McCoy in the early 20’s would be nice, too. Just don’t see anyone jumping that high.

I don't buy the Lions are really that interested in a OLine for #8. I think they are looking for mid-round guys for that position. This is probably just some guy who wants to stand out by taking unusual picks at certain positions that no one else is putting out there just to get some clicks.
But then again, I never in a million years thought they would draft Ragnow, so who knows with this lot.

I don’t think that’s what Jeremiah is doing. He’s an ex-scout and is pretty dialed in. I know he was in on some things with Lions before. Not saying that’s the way they go, but I don’t think he’s just throwing shit at the wall either.

Well he does lose a lot of credibility with me by saying the Giants are drafting Daniel Jones, I'd be shocked for sure. Like I said, clicks.
