I agree with this article. I think my dream scenario is for them to just keep trading down as much as they can and accumulate as many day 1/2 picks as they can, but if they're sitting there at 7 with no great offers on the table with Fields or Lance sitting there, they need to pull the trigger. Don't make the same mistake they did last year not taking Tua. Fields is the 2nd best QB prospect in the draft. Yes, I realize there is probably a 50% chance either one of them could end up being a bust. But what are the chances of any other position they draft being a bust? You could probably argue OL would be a safer bet, and I get that. But if there is even a chance Fields or Lance could turn into game-changing franchise QBs, you can't afford not to take one of them. I wanted them to take Tua last year at 3 and I actually like both Fields and Lance better as prospects than I liked Tua coming out last year.
No and No, next year will be more appropriate after seeing how Goff does. Fields and Lance are not better prospects than Tua imo.
Nothing will be different after next year. We'll still be in the same shit situation. I know things change quickly but I don't see a better prospect than Fields coming out next year and Fields is a better prospect than Tua was coming out last year.
And funny, I think Lance will be a better pro than Fields. Just depends on the situation. But I say no to both. But I personally think one or maybe even both will be gone before #7. And the Lions dreams of trading down will be null.

If a QB is the best player on their board at 7, then take him. Don’t wait, you have no idea what may happen next year and you may be chasing a QB.
I also think Fields and Lance are better then Tua, but I was never a huge Tua fan. People are super critical of Mac Jones for the talent he played with, Tua played with more talent and Jones arguably did it better. That’s ignoring some of the injury concerns with Tua.
This whole QB thing is interesting to me. I really have no preference for any particular position or player for their first pick. But maybe it's just me, having had a couple years to cool off my jaded outlook. I'm really curious to see what they do. As of this moment, I don't think they can really make a bad move. Barring, of course, a terrible reach, just to grab a QB.
Although I understand it, I don't think it's all that critical to "wait and see" how Goff does. Whether he rocks it or tanks it, developing a young QB creates a ton of value. And lets be honest. The Lions have barely had quality starting QB's over the years. The back ups have been atrocious.
About the only thing I am not in favor of is taking a young QB and throwing him to the wolves. If they draft a QB this year, they need to commit to keeping him on the sidelines for any meaningful games. If Goff completely shits the bed or ends up injured, the season will likely be over at that point, anyway.
Either way, whether they draft a QB this year or next year, my only hope is that they're smart enough to not destroy two QB's during the current installment of the never ending rebuild.
#1 Sam Bradford QB Oklahoma St. Louis Rams #25 Tim Tebow QB Florida Denver Broncos
2011
#1 Cam Newton QB Auburn Carolina Panthers #8 Jake Locker QB Washington Tennessee Titans #10 Blaine Gabbert QB Missouri Jacksonville Jaguars #12 Christian Ponder QB Florida State Minnesota Vikings
2012
#1 Andrew Luck QB Stanford Indianapolis Colts #2 Robert Griffin QB Baylor Washington Redskins #8 Ryan Tannehill QB Texas A&M Miami Dolphins #22 Brandon Weeden QB Oklahoma State Cleveland Browns
Trey Lance had a 2020 season that no one talks about. 15-30 for 149 yards, 2 TD's and an int. Those Central Arkansas Bear's must be a helluva a team! Well, actually no, they're not.
The same way Lance has been played up, Fields has been played down. I hope we get a trade offer too good to be true, because this is a rebuilding year and we need to see what we have in Goff. W/O a trade if Sewell is there that's who I take.
I don't think Fields has been played down. There are good and bad to his game. The good he has a legit arm and speed and showed up to play on the big stage. The bad is his slow reads and he doesn't throw guys open on the break which is something that is huge in the NFL. There have been a lot of big arm QBs that have not done anything in the NFL.

I think those are things that can be coached. I would argue Fields is better in those areas than Cam Newton was coming out.

Not sure Fields will bomb, I've gotten a few bomb calls wrong on QB's. For all we know Lawrence could bomb and the Jaguars are right back looking for a QB in a few seasons.
I think the Lions are going to do whatever they can to trade down and aquire more pics so if they need to next 1-2 seasons trade up in the draft to grab the best QB.

Looks like Lance is available now. And probably for a late rd. draft choice. 49er's might just cut him if there are no takers. Maybe it was the injuries. But this was a major draft bust.

It's funny. I was looking at the 2019 draft. We took will Harris in the third. CJ Gardner Johnson was taken in the fourth. Hockenspn was taken ninth overall. Josh Allen for Buff was taken number 7...what a difference two spots makes. Now CJ is a much better player than Will Harris. Go figure. We took jahlani Tavia in the second round. He plays for NE now. I don't even remember that dude. Anyways. Im glad we didn't waste any picks on fields or lance that year.

Looks like the Vikings might take a shot at Lance. But I can't imagine them giving up much for him. Maybe a 7th rounder that could get upgraded to a 5th rounder. Quite the fall from grace.

Not sure the point of retreading this thread. I still stand by my statement that if they felt Lance or Fields could be a franchise QB they should have taken them and rolled with the risk. And Lance wasn't available for them where they were picking anyway. The jury is still out on them. Lance never had a chance in the situation he was drafted into - Shanahan didn't want him, he was a Lynch guy. And then the injuries killed any opportunity he had. Fields showed a little last year with not much to work with.
I also mentioned Tua. Are the Lions any better off having drafted Okudah over Tua (not to mention Herbert was there)? Last I checked Okudah isn't even on the team anymore.
Also still not a big Tua fan. Ironically, the way things have gone for Herbert reminds me of Stafford.
Yeah, I can see the similarities. Although one key difference is Stafford was drafted right before the rookie wage scale so the Chargers had Herbert for 3 years at a discount while he played pretty well.

We all have bad takes time to time, but rather personally have a bad take than just sit on the sidelines and not have an opinion on anything like a pussy.
