I trust Holmes to build the team through the draft as I struggle to come up with a recent Lions FA signing that has worked out at all.
i wouldnt hold his feet to the fire on that just yet...there was a lot of dead money and the scrapping of a roster. I think the approach has been to save money while looking for the diamond in the rough that can be part of the long term plans. This offseason is really the first time they will be looking at getting some top tier FAs, imo...

Deshon Elliot has been good. Resigning Evan Brown. I wasn’t pumped about it at the time, but Kalif Raymond has made some big plays.
I think it’s pretty much confirmed they were in on John Johnson in year 1 and there were some rumors they were in on Marcus Williams last year. Other than that, they’ve stayed mid to low tier, which return had been mixed, but that’s generally what you’re going to get with low investment. I’d rather keep the selective approach with upper end FA’s and not just chase the next guy if you miss a target. I wasn’t crazy about basically re-signing the entire FA class this off-season, but it at least it’s been short term deals.

I was of course referring to top tier FA signings. Recent signings that worked would be Golden Tate, Dre Bly, Glover Quinn, Tullock, Marvin Jones. But in the past few years we had Flowers, Rick Wagner, Vaitai... Track record in recent years is pretty bad. Some small pieces, but nothing epic. And I think most teams now hold onto the elite players until they start to fade or become injury prone. All in all I think the draft is the best tool to build a team. The Rams are pretty much screwed for the next few years largely due to the Stafford trade. Bittersweet is they won a Superbowl buy now the injuries come and it ain't looking too good for them in the near future.
The Lions need to just say fuck QB early this year and take Jalen Carter with the Rams pick.
Yeah if he’s there it’s gonna be tough to pass up. But QB purgatory is brutal, too.
The QB evaluations are gonna be huge.
Responding in the draft thread since the other thread veered off. Will probably need a top 3-4 pick to get Carter. I know it's not as big of a need but Anderson might be the better prospect and hard to pass up. I think I'm at the point now where since a top 2 pick doesn't seem likely, if Young or Stroud aren't available, go defense with the first pick and whatever QB they have rated highest with the second pick (my hope would be Richardson).

I’d rather have Carter than Anderson, but really can’t go wrong. I also don’t think #2 is out of the question. Rams are beat up and that schedule isn’t easy, there’s a chance they may not win another game.
I think Richardson may go back for another year, but who knows?

I think the only way they don't win another game is if Stafford, Kupp and Donald don't play another game this season. The irony of that is they'd probably sit them all without hesitation if they had a first round pick to play for. Maybe Kroenke will throw Brad a bone.

I’d be shocked if Kupp plays another game, they said he was only coming back if they were in playoff contention. Donald has same injury, so maybe he plays through late in season, but if they’re playing it safe with Kupp, I’d imagine would be similar with Donald? Stafford will probably play, but behind that OL and with no one to throw to and no running game, they may get him killed.
The way for the Lions to really open up their options in the draft is to get a DT in FA. Now, you can take trade downs from one or both of our first round positions. The first round CB's are a great group and there isn't that much separation in the group. The problem with DT's is that they seldom contribute that much in their first season, esp a player like Carter that isn't going to have the snap counts you want from a guy who is taken in the first round. I think we're in a position to trade down and still have 2 first round picks and additional pick(s) this year AND get an additional first next year. I don't think anyone could have predicted the breakdown of the Rams that has put us in this position, but now that we have it it's important to maximize our good fortune. If we walk with Bresee in the first along with Porter jr, and then get a MLB like Jack Campbell in the 2nd and grab a RB to do what Swift can't we're on our way. There are some decent to good QB's in this draft that will be there late, it IS a good draft for QB's just not so much at the top. You want guys who can run and pass, and in the 6th we should use 1 of those picks on the "best of the rest". Go to Walters and look at all the QB's AFTER pick #9. Why #9, because last year that's how many QB's were drafted and in a normal year there is 11. The one's they have ranked after #9? My favorite would be Duggan at #13, but there's no way he makes it out of the top 10, Bo Nix might very well be there though. Penix from Washington is also a guy to look at. Hendon Hooker could fall as well because of the injury, and using a 6th is worth the look.
Here are my choices for the Lions 2 first round picks. Houston should get the 1st pick and take the best QB of this draft class C.J. Stroud. The Lions will get the 2nd pick of the draft from the Rams, I would take Bryce Young (QB, Alabama). With our 2nd first round pick (most likely in the middle teens) I would take at this time, either Joey Porter Jr. (CB, Penn St.) or Tuli Tuipulotu (DT, USC). Tuipulotu is the best 3-tech in this draft class with 20 sacks in 27 games, his freshman thru Junior year. He is 6' 3" 290 pounds with a lot of speed.

Agreed, Stafford is in his 2nd concussion protocol in 2 weeks.

Young is going #1 overall. I'm even hearing rumblings Stroud might fall out of the top 10.

It will be interesting, I wouldn’t be surprised if Levis shoots up into the #1 spot. He has every tool you want and I think the team being such a mess this year may have people overlook some of the play this year.
If they win out, they will make the playoffs. The only way that they wouldn't is if both Washington and NY Giants both win 4 of their last 6 and they play each other twice yet. I don't see any of the other 3-4 win teams winning out.
Granted I don't think the Lions win out, but 4-2 is possible.
The Lions will not miss the playoffs if they win out, 10 wins and 7 losses would be their final record. We hold the tiebreaker, head-to-head, against the Giants and Commanders, 6th and 7th playoff seed at this time, respectively. Looking at the rest of these team's schedule, the Giants have the hardest schedule in the league for December and January playing, the Commanders twice, the Eagles twice, the Vikings and Colts. I believe the Giants will be lucky if they win one game.
The Commanders should get to 10 wins and 7 losses in my estimation. They play the Giants as above and the Bowns, which should get them to 10 wins. The other 2 games are against the 49ers in SF and the Cowboys, both games should be losses.
Falcons and Seahawks right now are both seeded on the playoff bubble ahead of the Lions. Falcons at 5 wins and 7 losses and the Seahawks at 6 wins and 5 losses. If the Lions win out, we hold the tie breaker against the Falcons due to better conference record. So, when the Lions beat the Jags, we immediately go ahead of the Falcons.
The Seahawks hold the head-to-head tiebreaker against the Lions. Their remaining schedule is against, the Rams twice, the Panthers, the Jets, the 49ers, and the Chiefs. 4 of these games are at home. I believe the Chiefs and 49ers beat them and the Seahawks end the season at 10 wins and 7 losses.
Seahawks make the playoffs as the 6th seed with the Lions through tiebreakers holding the 7th seed.
Granted I don't think the Lions win out, but 4-2 is possible.
The Lions will win out if the secondary can stay healthy. The Lions must have Okudah, Jacobs, Hughes, Joseph, and Elliot on the field for all remaining games. If Oruwariye (he hasn't been his self this year), or Harris (he flat sucks) have to play much at all, we are doomed. Opposing teams pick on these guys with great success. (i.e. Harris has allowed 13 receptions against 15 targets for over 200 yards just in the last 2 games). Harris killed us against the Bills, giving up big plays constantly.
