"Emergency starters Dan Skipper and Kayode Awosika allowed both Jared Goff sacks on the day and half of the eight pressures overall. Ed Oliver feasted on the mismatch, finishing with six tackles, two quarterback hits and one sack."
PFF Grades: Kayode Awosika: 47.1 Dan Skipper 35.1
There really isn't much you can do about this.
Is it time to use a fullback or incorporate an H-back type role?
Only real option I see is giving Jason Cabinda the majority of offensive snaps at FB and try to make a living on the hitches, slants and screens in place of an actual running game. It might even be trickier for defenses to prepare for since basically no team actually makes use of the FB position in any meaningful way.
The play was successful. Chark was open, they just weren’t on the same page. My issue with it was more being aggressive on 3rd down and then kicking the the FG instead of going for it.
I had bigger issues with end of first half management.
In the end, was a fun game. Some questionable decisions, but also some decisions they made are the reason the game was competitive in the first place.
I think the longest play the Lions had on offense was 26 yards. So 3rd and inches you run a 30 yard fade? I'm not buying it....total shit call no matter how open he appeared to be. Chark hasn't done shit all year. The balls needs to be in St Browns hands or one of the running backs. Fake jet sweep play action.... something beside a 30 yard fade pattern to guy that has a ton of drops.
Not to mention Goff has demonstrated zero ability to throw a deep ball all season long. He can absolutely throw the 20-30 yd tight spiral with zip on it down the seam, but his deep ball has been a disaster this season.

It's funny what fans get their panties in a wad about. If they go for it on 3rd & 1 there and get stuffed at the line all the people complaining about the play call would be complaining they were too conservative. On top of that, not only was Chark open but St. Brown was wide open in the middle of the field for a much higher percentage completion and Goff never even looked his way.

With 3 timeouts remaining, I'm not sure why you think anyone would complain about trying to pick up the first down in that situation instead of throwing deep. They have tried this more than once this season (throwing deep on 3rd or 4th and short), and it has yet to work. In the NFL, the difference between a win and a loss is a decision or two. This was the wrong decision in that moment. Even if they get stuffed trying to run the ball, the clock keeps running, eliminating the opportunity for the game-winning drive by Buffalo. Overall, just a really dumb call, and even worse decision by Goff.
I'm not heartbroken over the loss, but this game was winnable. Campbell's clock management is actually more of a concern than this call, but as soon as they snapped the ball and Goff dropped back, I started shaking my head. Even if he completes the pass, it was still the wrong call for that situation.

Buffalo looked to be in zero on the play, they played to their aggression instead of running into it. Again the issue is less the specific play call, he had more than one option open. That was execution. The biggest issue is, if you’re going to try and win the game, you can’t try to be aggressive on 3rd down and then pull back on 4th and play for the tie. Either go for the win or go for the tie. They tried to do both.
Also, the bigger mismanagement was the end of the first half.

Or a 2 yard run stuff ends up causing Badgley to miss the FG due to the extra yards.

There was another issue before the end of the half calling a timeout before the two minute warning. He keeps doing this giving offenses more time.
I too just think there was a better play to call in that situation, pass or run to call there. I nice little play action would have been better than a drop back pass with a bunch of guys running deep routes. I understand the call because they were in a short yardage look and probably more in man coverage. I would do a little play action there.
