But you WANT to blame the owner, because that is the only scapegoat you have left. I get it, if I had no real leg to stand on, I would do the same.
So you don't think WCF not only hiring Millen but sticking with him for as long as he did didn't hugely impact the organization for 8+ years? And to top it off hires his protégé to take his place?
A really bad owner can cause issues, but overall I don’t think they have as much impact as people think. I also don’t think Martha has done anything that would make you believe she’s a bad owner.
Agree it depends on the owner but the bottom line is there are owners in the NFL right now that are negatively impacting their team. And that's why I didn't mention Martha (jury's still out), but I think it's safe to say WCF was a big reason the Lions were the laughing stock of the 2000's.
I also don't think it's just "luck" when an owner hires the right personnel.
May not be luck. But Bob Kraft(and Belichick) is probably viewed differently if not for Mo Lewis leveling Bledsoe. At that point he was the guy that interfered with the draft and FA with Parcells.
Am I crazy to think that the Lions will make a push for Derrick Henry? GM and Coach are in win now mode. Our OC loves to run the ball. According to multiple reports our O-Line graded out to be top 3rd in league in run blocking but RBs didn't do anything. Best way to protect a defense is to run the ball and chew up clock. Keeping Stafford upright along with the fact he looked impressive last year on play action plays.
Not saying that I would do this because I don't believe in paying big money for RB. Just think if the Lions are really in win now, it could be something to watch

Yes. I don’t think he’s getting to FA anyway, but I don’t see them going after him if he does.

Haven't seen/heard a single thing about this. Was it on The Onion?
I just saw it again, it was actually Matt Dery who is saying this, claiming he has "friends" within the organization. I guess he said this on a podcast that he does.
Eh, I have no idea who that guy is but I did listen to some of the podcast. He's basing that statement on the fact that the Lions have all this cap space and haven't used it and they're not having some season ticket holder event this year. Last I checked they weren't allowed to sign free agents yet.
I kind of get the feeling that Martha does not want to pay top dollar to players that frankly, not worth it. Some players have come and gone here that were good, or very good players. Riley Reiff, Tomlinson, Warford, Suh,Ebron off the top of my head..probably more than that. Were they worth top FA dollars....? I as an owner would want my monies worth. I think that is kinda what Martha wants these guys to strive towards. The Snacks Trade, Daniels..not top dollar but short term. And with Snacks..just can't pay a guy that kind of money for what he delivered. He may go somewhere else and thrive as a rotational guy...but what is the going rate for those guys. Daniels was a gamble that went very bad. Slay is another basket of issues. Is he worth top DB money....To some team yes. But I don't think he is worth it for the Lions..Not now with the current state of the Defense. He can be a chip to play for helping build the next generation of Defense. That would be the smart thing to do. Package Slay and the #3 pick to Miami for their 3 # 1's, maybe they would even throw in Josh Rosen. I would like that trade.

They had more money last year and sat on it. The season ticket holder summit used to be a big thing that they did, but they are scaling that back to some lame Draft Day event. I don't know, there could be something there. Probably not.

FMC stock is at a 10 year low and in globally they are not doing well at all
They are still making money no matter what the team does with wins and losses, so why spend the money if they do not have to
First, what is the percentage/dollar amount that a team owner can spend on a player's salary out of their own pocket with no reflection on the salary cap. Second, there is a min/max salary cap in which all teams must fit their team salary expenses, yes? Third, can you please explain... not by posting some random Ford Motor Co. stock information article... how producing automobiles that are not road worthy negates the logic behind the answers to #1 and #2? I'm just having a difficult time following. I could understand if you were referring to staff at the stadium or even the coaching staff, but player salaries? I don't see it.
I asked God for a bike, but God doesn't work that way. So I stole a bike, and asked God for forgiveness.

Not sure I am following you. Are we assuming money from football has to be kept separate in special account versus other funds ownership may have or generate?

I assume there is, your saying yes...seems reasonable

Simply put, if the Lions don't max out player salary then they offsetting potential losses in other areas by hoarding the cash. The best seasons they have had in recent history are what 9 wins. You think the Lions make a bunch more money if they win 4-6 more games a season?
The Lions have been hoarding cap money, I haven't really seem them spend it. They are about middle of the pack right now. They are about 40 million less in player salary versus the top spending team the Pittsburg Steelers
Here is another way to look at it, The Lions have the 12th highest payroll and the 29th best record last season. They retained the GM and HC, I really don't see them in a spending mode right now, in fact I would be surprised in their cap space decreases all that much this season and player payroll increases.

Again, you can't look at that 10 days before free agency even starts. If the Lions are near the top in available cap space come August, then there might be something to it. Right now, it means nothing (for any team).

I am not saying "THIS IS WHAT IS HAPPENING" …. So you think it's dumb, ok great
It's called a discussion, usually people bring things up to talk about especially in the offseason. You should try it sometime versus just counter posting to what other people bring up.
I think trading down and addressing needs is the way to go. Especially Cap wise. Also, Driskell has proven he could be an effective starter if given the chance. Why spend tons on a rookie and waste a pick this year, when Driskell could fill that gap if need be?
