I like Kancey, but to me he’s more of a guy like Dominique Easley or Mo Hurst. He just doesn’t have any length which will give him some issues if he doesn’t win with that first step and I don’t think he has the strength of other undersized 3T’s like Donald or Geno Atkins. I don’t think you can have him on the field on run downs at all unless you can get him stronger and even then the lack of length might limit him. Think he’ll be a good situational pass rusher, but even at 18 it would depend on what’s on the board for me.
If Kancey trimmed down could he play LB. It's a stretch I know but dude is fast. A 260 lbs LB (if he dropped 20) whatever the case as long as we don't take a TE in the first ...even that Michael Mayer monster ..no thanks
The QB depth in this draft is real, there will be players taken after the first that will be playing and starting down the road.
Who would you target after the first? I think Hooker goes in the first. I like McKee.
I think there will be plenty of options when we pick in the 5th, including Stetson Bennett and Jaren Hall. They brought in Martinez and he has the right tools but I think he could be an UDFA. We need 4 QB's just to run preseason drills. Draft one and take another UDFA. Martinez made big strides last season, hard to say what other teams might have interest.
in my opinion if you are looking for a replacement for Goff even just as a backup for a couple years then draft him in the first round. quit wasting picks on QBs in mid rounds. go big or go FA.

Trump MB has spoken. I need to make t shirts that say "go big or go the fuck home!"
this link shows every QB that has played in a SB and what round they were drafted in. more 1st rounders took their teams to the SB vs non 1st rounders. and whil total is close there are 9 QBs not drafted in t he first round that played in multiple SBs. better drafting in 1st round IMO. you can likely make your case for whatever you want from that list. but since the draft was shortened to just 7 rounds non 1st round QBs werent as successful. www.drafthistory.com/index.php/superbowl_quarterbacks/

I am convinced that Holmes is taking the wait and see approach to the backup QB or 3rd QB. Like what if the draft doesn't fall like all these guys think and Bryce Young or CJ Stroud or whoever they like of the QBs drops to them, then I believe he take them before committing anything to another backup. There is still guys like Wentz, Bridgewater, Mason Rudolph that are still out there, while not ideal backups, that do have starting experience in the league. Not many of the QBs signed to be backups/gaps in free agency give me any pause to say "damn why didn't they pick that guy up!"
Looks like Sudfeld contract is basically $1M, so not really that terrible if they do manage to find someone else in the draft/FA yet to be the backup in 2023.
agree. plus we need to consider who will e available next years draft. they obviously have their eyes on some possible prospects for that possibility and their decision making this year could play into that to a point.and to make a point look at Bo Nix. 72% completion percentage. expected to declare for draft this year but didnt. several really good prospects in 24.

and the Lions have a QB that was the 1st pick in the draft with SB experience
The Lions are sitting with a nearly complete roster before the draft which is amazing the exception is at DT where it's McNeill and a bunch of rotational players, so with a complete roster they have the ability to either select luxury players or start projecting which players with expiring contracts in the next few years they can't pay and draft replacements now so in my opinion there are a few areas they should go.
1. Get a DT to play alongside McNeill, if available Jalen Carter is the blue chip option I don't buy the character concerns but if I'm wrong and the Lions staff are not comfortable then Bresee at #18 or Mazi Smith in the second, granted neither player can offer the pass rush that Carter does but especially Smith can give them a tough run defender to help prevent games like vs. the Panther last year.
2. Take a RB at some point, the RB class is great this year and with Swift seeming unlikely to be resigned for the future you need a RB to pair with Montgomery and frankly with the expiration date on RBs it's a good idea to take one every couple years even if you are hitting on them, everyone has their favorite prospect but I'm more concerned that they select one in a good value class like this.
3. Get future prospects at positions you have stop gaps at, DB and OG comes to mind both positions have a lot of 1 year prove it deals and the Lions can't be the big spenders in free agency every year. That could be a Witherspoon or Branch at DB in a trade down from #6 or at OG to keep that unit in the top 5 in the NFL Torrence at #18 or other options in the second but these are positions where there is going to have to be roster turnover after this year and the Lions are in competitive window.
4. Be open to luxury picks I'm not the biggest fan of players like the following but they have the resources to make it worth a gamble:
Kancey at DT (sorry def) because I don't think he can be good enough against the run to start but if they were to double dip at DT and pair him with a Mazi Smith type and give yourself an amazing interior pass rush sub package then I could get on board.
Bijan Robinson in the late 1st, I don't like the value proposition with using a 1st round on a RB the elevated salary and extra year of team control is better spent on other positions but if the staff feels he is LaDainian Tomlinson or Adrian Peterson and you put that behind this offensive line and have a play action QB like Goff this could be a prolific offense.
Find legitimate talent at LB, it's clear they don't value LB a lot and that can be justified but if the most important defensive positions are already stocked it could be time to upgrade over a journeyman in Anzalone, a developmental Barnes and a good but limited Rodriguez, I'm partial to a Jack Campbell to really support the run defense but I understand the excitement around Drew Sanders also though the play style reminds me of Jarod Davis and that scares me.

I actually think Bijan at 18 is great value. Usually I’d say second round is the best spot to get value, but with his talent and a contract that’s like 4/16 with a 5th year option in a RB’s prime years, that would be great.

agree but we didnt draft him. point is draft a QB in 1st round. later rounds are usually back ups at best.
But there are some absolute beasts available at TE.
Hell has frozen over. I think they need to grab one of these guys if they're available. These aren't normal TEs. They're human wrecking balls.
Not opposed to it on day 3, but I wouldn't go crazy. I don't think TE, at least as a pass catcher, is a big part of the Ben Johnson offense. I also think they're very high on James Mitchell and he could take a bit step up almost 2 years removed from ACL surgery, which is the real recovery time frame for that injury (despite what a lot of people claim).

Good points. And while I don't see it so much as a need, I think the organization as a whole values the Tight End position. And in general, they seem to like the big guys who are unusually athletic for their size (Sewell, Vatai, McNeill, etc).

Washington isn't a first round pick and we don't need any TE's. We need help and depth mostly on D. That said I would absolutely get someone to replace Cabinda at FB and that could very well be someone who plays TE. Trump is wrong about drafting a QB after the first because we don't need a starter, we need depth. This was suppose to be a once in a lifetime draft for QB's according to some of the talking heads, it isn't, but there will be some QB's taken later that have a chance to play in this league. We need depth at QB and if Bridgewater doesn't sign our offer we need to look hard at who's available in the 5th and 6th.

I'm not in favor of it at all, but if you're gonna draft a TE at 18 it should be Mayer and not Washington. That said, I'd rather draft Hooker at 18 than a TE.
