Finish D with front 7 in draft and this team looks legit to compete
Oh I think they've already reached that goal.
A finished D with front 7 would be more like "over-the-top"
im not so sure...they havent really done anything to address the front 7 that was allowing 150-300 yds a game rushing...get a dt or 2, add a stud 3 down LB and this team looks legit
Funny, id say they are doing more the patriot way than fatty patty ever did. Dont need big names, just complimentary pieces that play their role
I don't disagree with the logic, but if things go how we all hope, this might be the last time for a while they're in a great position to draft a potential franchise-altering QB.
Yup
That is the thing, you are not going to draft this high again for a long time
I think you can still address the DL/LB core in the draft, if you draft a QB.
I think it is 50/50 if they do go QB, it all depends who is there when thy draft
Goff isn't going anywhere. They're spending aggressively on short-term contracts. They've made significant investments in that offensive line, and they're looking to make a serious run right now, while it's still intact. Drafting a QB would just disrupt things. We don't need to put Goff on notice or create controversy with the fans. Just ride this thing out and see where it goes in 2023. Then reassess.

And by the time he actually develops, our offensive line will be full of rookies or one-year stopgap types. It's always a game of whack-a-mole. And every single year there's a supposed "franchise altering QB." If the goal is to win now, Goff is really your only realistic option. After a century (give or take) of futility, we're finally in a "win now" situation. Or at least the best we've been in for quite some time, because our division is basically undergoing major changes or is in rebuild mode.
Forget the future. It's already bright with a billion draft pics. Look away from the shiny object and win now.

The Lions D was good over the final 10 games. They had a top 5 scoring D, the Carolina debacle skews the run D a bit, but even then it would be middle of the pack(top 10 over other 9 games), forced a bunch of turnovers.
With the way this team is set up now, they should be at minimum in the playoffs. Especially with the way the NFC is right now.

I guess I'm not as confident they're as close to winning a Super Bowl as you seem to be. If you get the right guy, he should be ready to take over in 2024. And any rookies they draft this year (not just QB) will need time to develop.

They’re also in the unique position they can do both if they want. If they decided to take a QB at 6, they still have 4 more picks in the top 100 to add to the roster.

Right, that's basically what my original point was. Even if they take a QB at 6 and he busts, while not ideal, it's not the end of the world.
That said, if the top 4 are gone by 6, I'm starting to warm up to the idea of taking Hooker on day 2.
Y'all need to take this QB draft envy and squash it. There is no one besides Stroud and Young worth the risk and we don't need a QB. We signed Dobbs and are looking at Teddy Bridgewater. And I've thought long and hard about this. If a team wants to grab Richardson for an extra pick, then we take Jalen Carter. I don't care about everyone's law degree and how we are all upstanding citizens. The kid caught a break with the judge. He's gonna be one pissed off rookie after community service and maybe he grows up a little. MCDC is def mulling this one over boys. I'm tired of taking choir boys when we can sure up this front 4 like a motherfuxker. Nose tackling that run game...Buggs and Jalen Carter ... Paschal and Hutch and Kominsky and James Houston III they will cause fits man. Sign that Florida wild child up and fuck anyone saying we need a damn QB right now to sit the bench for two years. Take Jalen Carter stick him in now, worry about a QB bridge when we get to it. Goff is in sync with the guru so...
Gawd i hope qb is still there at 6 so the lions can trade back....
Not sure i see the value of a de at 6 that will be gone in 5 yrs, dont see dt value, dont see lb value, dont need ot, could see cb with mosely on 1 yr, but whos getting cut? So cb unlikely now...looking like de or trade back to me....

It's not envy
It's simple
Is Goff your guy yes or no?
If you have 100% faith in him you do not draft a QB
If you have any question, you draft a QB.
This Lions team is young, the FAs are short term deals. If you go all in on Goff and he shits the bed you are looking at another QB rebuild when your young team is hitting its prime from when Holmes/Campbell took over.
I think Holmes doesn't put all his eggs in one basket. If he does not draft a QB and Goff misses, Holmes and Campbell miss as well and the party is over for them in 2025.
The other scenario is if you do not draft one this year and wait until next year and Goff underperforms in 2023, the Lions will have to spend a lot of picks and capital to move up next year to get a QB.

The offense, scheme, players ... are all there because they maximize Goff's strengths. As long as he has that offensive line and Ben Johnson, he'll do nothing but light it up. Problem is, the clock is ticking, that band will be breaking up and you'll be left with a foundation of Sewell and Dan Skipper. Johnson will be HC somewhere else. Time window is now. This is your shot.

With Goff this is your shot. You develop a second guy you may have extended your shelf life. I'm not saying any of you are wrong, but Holmes may want his cake and ear it too.

All those reasons are why you take a potential franchise QB on day 1 if you think your guy is there. And if their window to win it all is just this year we're fukked anyway so might as well roll the dice.

You're really not getting this. You don't start recruiting your bride's eventual replacement until after your honeymoon.
This is why we can't have nice things.

Your assuming Goff will have another career season and stay healthy. I hope he does both.
We all want Goff to succeed, but he does have his contract coming to an end soon as well, he is pushing 30 years old. There are a lot of reasons to draft a qb this season. Not just because Detroit fans have a QB hang up.

Maybe it's more of an "offensive" hangup? Struggling to understand why fans of a top-3 offense/31st ranked defense would even mention an offensive player with the top pick. Especially when our current one performed at a pro bowl level. Unless it's "QB hangup," which I'm suspecting might be at play.

There are going to be plenty of teams better than the Lions next year, fortunately they are in the AFC. Win the North and honestly anything could happen. The time IS now, really good work in FA and with the picks they have in the draft, well, they are going to have a chance to go places.
