and that @lionsgeezer is why you're a geezer. I think Ben Johnson will get an HC job this year (I hope he doesn't) but because of the McDaniel's success, and the McVay Success and that this is a copycat league everyone is looking for the "creative offensive minded head coach" not the guy who's been around for years in the system and finally has a breakout year as an HC. I Hope he stays, but I Think he'll leave. Glenn is just a token interview that looks legit. His Defense was worst in the league even after "getting better" midway through the season. No one actually views him as a legit candidate just someone they won't get accused of using as a Token.
Sure am a Geezer, no doubt. Please name for me which HC in the league has only 1 year as a Coordinator? I don't think there are any.
Dan Campbell had no experience as a coordinator.
In addition, McDaniel, Vrabel, Staley, Tomlin, Stefanski, Zac Taylor (no coordinator experience), John Harbaugh (no coordinator experience), Andy Reid was actually never a coordinator before coaching the Eagles (though did have a ton of experience). That was just with a quick search of random coaches. There are probably more.

I would say, having a successful coach that is in your corner pushing you to get a job is also important. Just being really good as a coordinator doesn't mean you would be a good head coach. You have to manage players. And I think their has been a plethora of HC that knew how to manage people versus being the best of the best at running an offense or defense.
I think we have seen this with MCDC. But I think if you have a combination of getting the best out of players as well as being really good at coaching, that's a rare find and that's what GMs have to determine is best for their teams.
I'd have to imagine that Campbell and Holmes are already figuring out a strategy should one of the current coordinators gets another job. With continued success, you would have to believe somebody goes at some point. But I am coming down from my Duce getting a HC gig, I was just re-watching a couple episodes of Hard Knocks and I can see how he comes a little bit off-putting.

Again I don't try to be rude was only teasing about the geezer part since it's your name. HOwever, my point stands. This is a copy cat league, young offensive minded guys who are viewed as innovative have done well and I don't see any reason why BJ wouldn't get an opening. Do I agree with it? NO! I just say what makes logical sense.

To be fair, most of these guys were either understudies of legendary coaches and/or or earned superbowl rings as assistants for dominant teams ... or were assistant head coaches for said legendary coaches (or coaching trees), and/or dominant teams, etc.
I still like BJs chances, but he doesn't check any of those boxes unfortunately. Most of his experience has been position coach for losing teams and inexperienced HCs with no real lineage. I mean you could say that he has some Sean Peyton lineage (as is Campbell, who is Parcels-inspired), but you can't really call him a "Parcels Disciple."

He's probably the best young play caller in the game right now. Hopefully we can hang onto him for a few seasons, but I doubt it.

Head coaches usually aren't play-callers. His best attribute is his philosophy of tailoring an offense to the strengths of his players, and they love the guy. And the fact that he learned the ropes in an organization that has a highly competitive and passionate mentality, and hope it's rubbed off. These were also qualities that Wayne Fontes brought to the table. lol.
But I agree he'll probably get a shot sooner rather than later.

The first is the Carolina Panthers, which is not all that surprising. This past weekend, Jonathan Jones briefly said during the CBS pregame show that, “Ben Johnson has the lead in Carolina.” Obviously, a request for an in-person interview shows a legitimate interest as well. Here are the top-six odds for the Panthers job as of Tuesday afternoon:
Lions OC Ben Johnson: +200 Eagles OC Shane Streichen: +400 Panthers interim HC Steve Wilks: +500 Giants OC Mike Kafka: +750 Former Saints HC Sean Payton: +900 Former Colts HC Frank Reich: +1000
DraftKings Sportsbook also lists Johnson as the favorite for the Colts job right now. However, those odds are a little more scattered. Indianapolis has already cast a very wide net for their job
Lions OC Ben Johnson: +350 Chiefs OC Eric Bieniemy: +400 Bills DC Leslie Frazier: +550 49ers DC Demeco Ryans: +750 Cowboys DC Dan Quinn: +750 Rams DC Raheem Morris: +1000
In addition to those two jobs, Johnson shows up on the odds for every other coaching vacancy. He’s got the second-best odds for the Texans job (+350, behind Eagles DC Jonathan Gannon). And despite not interviewing with either team yet, Johnson is tied for the 10th best odds for the Broncos job (+3000), and sixth for the Cardinals job (+1200).
Needless to say, sports bettors think Johnson has a pretty good chance of landing a head coaching job this cycle.
#Lions OC Ben Johnson informed interested teams he’s staying in Detroit, per sources.
Johnson was slated to travel Wednesday to interview with the #Panthers. But he feels Detroit is building something special and wants to see it through. Should be a hot HC name again next year.
This is great news! I mean really really good news!!! Good decision BJ!
The icing on the cake with this is that now Ben Johnson HAS to get results or he won't be a candidate next year. Should keep him motivated.
He is a brilliant play caller and play designer. I don't see this as an issue.
Things can turn very quickly in the NFL. People were calling for his head just this season after the Dallas game. Byron Leftwich was a head coaching candidate last offseason and now might be out of a job.
could be the ownership threw Johnson a bone, as in he is in line to replace Dan Campbell as Dan knows his limits and is fine with it and would be promoted.win-win for whenever it could happen.

If BJ is a one season wonder as an OC then he would also be the same as a HC. I think it's a good decision versus taking the money and running. If he establishes himself more in the league he will have a better HC opportunities in the future.
I don't think he will be a one season wonder. Some of his gameplans laid an egg this season I will agree. But when he was good he was brilliant.
This dude just turned down a potential head coaching job in the nfl to remain with the Detroit Lions...yes, the Lions. That takes some balls. I also think it speaks volumes about where this organization is at, from personnel to coaching to front office. I cant wait to see who is next to take discount, pay cut, short contract, or whatever to finish this team...and you just know players, both lions and free agents saw this....good things coming...
Source; John Cominsky, Alex Anzalone and Isaiah Buggs have approached Brad Holmes saying they’d be willing to take a little less to remain with the team in 2023.

Just playing devil's advocate...could also just be a case where he didn't want the Carolina gig or had inside information that he wasn't gonna get it anyway. It is kind of strange that he went on those other interviews and then decided to pull out right before the interview with the team that supposedly coveted him. Or maybe the Lions threw a bunch of money at him?
