I still think BJ stays one more year. And if he gets an offer after next year, that probably means the offense had another good year. Of course being the Lions, a year from now we'll probably be wishing he would have left.

He doesn't "look" like a HC to me. More of an X's and O's guy, but I wouldn't underestimate his intelligence, game management, and ability to relate to players.
But looks are often deceiving.
Aaron Glenn definitely looks the part.

I don't think either of our Coordinators are ready yet. Johnson has only one year of play calling and Glenn is still developing defensive wrinkles for his defenses. Both Coordinators were outcoached in several games this year, especially early in the season. That will not happen in a year or two. Game planning and In-game adjustments, excluding the Panthers game, improved over the course of the season. Next year will be pivotal for both Coordinators as opponents will be able to study tape and find tendencies/weaknesses in their game planning, Offensive and Defensive philosophies.
If I am the Owner or GM, I would want someone with more experience and proven track record. Ben Johnson with only 1 year as OC and Glenn 2-years as DC (disclaimer; lack of talent) still need to prove they can win through the test of time.
P.S. They will both be back.

and that @lionsgeezer is why you're a geezer. I think Ben Johnson will get an HC job this year (I hope he doesn't) but because of the McDaniel's success, and the McVay Success and that this is a copycat league everyone is looking for the "creative offensive minded head coach" not the guy who's been around for years in the system and finally has a breakout year as an HC. I Hope he stays, but I Think he'll leave. Glenn is just a token interview that looks legit. His Defense was worst in the league even after "getting better" midway through the season. No one actually views him as a legit candidate just someone they won't get accused of using as a Token.

This is the thing that gets overlooked and I do think the league is starting to adjust to, a little bit. Being a great coordinator doesn’t mean you can be a good HC. There’s so much to it and X’s and O’s is a small part of it. How can you manage the locker room, build a staff, manage that staff, handle in game decisions, adversity. Johnson may have all those qualities, but he may not. Glenn is getting interviews because I’d imagine he had a reputation for having some of those other qualities despite a statistically bad D.

This whole "Hot Coordinator" thing is kind of silly. How many failed NFL Head Coaches were once the "Hot Coordinator". I would look for someone that has been a head Coach at multiple levels, Pop Warner, High School, Jr. College, college, and then whatever Pro football experience they had. Then I would start my search there. This hot coordinator thing is like drafting a QB in the 5th rd. and hoping to win a Super Bowl with him. Can it happen? Sure, does it happen often.. not so much

My issue with the "hot coordinator" is that they usually come in married to their "holy/beloved system."
Wide-9, Tampa-2, West Coast, "Air Coryell", Run and Shoot, and whatever system Jeff Tedford runs
Reason I think BJ has a legit shot is because he starts with his personnel and devises a system that works with what he's got. And he's obviously a player-first coach (teacher as opposed to preacher). Everyone says nice things about their coaches, but his players gush over him almost embarrassingly.
He deserves an offer, and if he gets one, he'll run with it. Luckily, we have a qualified replacement waiting in the wings.

I see every year for the past several years the name of Eric Bienemy being tossed around. Yet nobody has offered him a HC gig yet. Chiefs have an awesome offence...Is it the player, the coaches...or both. BJ has 1 good year so far. However, Indy pulled Jeff Saturday off of Television and made him an interim HC..., so nothing Irsay does would surprise me. I could also see Jim Harbaugh going to Indy if Irsay gave him player personal responsibility. Houston also wants to interview BJ. I don't see it, but..who knows.
Teams want young and innovative, not retreads...look around the league, lots of younger or first time guys getting HC gigs. Your analogy of 5th round qb is just wrong, its like 1st round qbs...some are busts, some are great, some are just mediocre. You know what youre getting in retreads, its the younger guys that offer upside, and teams take a chance to beat others to the punch...
That said, I think 1 year is not quite enough and no one will hire BJ, this year...i think him taking interviews will be good for his development and his long term prospects, but unless he just slays the interviews, i think we get at least one more year with him.

I agree on all counts. Although I am a little more nervous about BJ leaving than I was even a few weeks ago.

Yeah I think there’s a lot of buzz around him right now.
But the ability to create culture, manage players, coaches and all the other intangibles are a different story. I am not saying he doesn't have those abilities, but from a coaching stand point he is somewhat inexperienced, this is his first coordinator opportunity this season.
Can he get hired? Absolutely. He is a fantastic talent.

Sure am a Geezer, no doubt. Please name for me which HC in the league has only 1 year as a Coordinator? I don't think there are any.

I’d have to look, but I think Staley with the Chargers may have only been DC with Rams for a year. And I think technically, Mike McDaniel was only OC for a year.
