I don't think there's any more we need out of the offense at this point. An upgraded backfield would just be icing on the cake.
Really! Why did the 49ers trade to get McCaffery if an upgraded backfield is just icing on the cake. John Lynched basically traded his 2023 draft using the 2nd, 3rd and 4th round picks in the 2023 and a 5th round pick in the 2024 draft.
Since the 49ers traded for McCaffery they have been averaging approximately 7 more points per game. Just saying and the proof is in the pudding!
I don’t understand the logic of Witten taken on day 2, Mayer compared to Witten so that means Mayer is a day 2 talent? So if a QB is compared to Brady he’s a day 3 talent, but if he’s compared to J’Marcus Russell he’s a day 1?
And the logic of trading Hockenson and drafting a TE would be the cost. Hockenson is going to be in line for a monster contract.
That said, I wouldn’t take a TE in 1st this year, there’s enough depth to find value later and I’m not sure how much the position is valued in the offense.
Mayer has a day 2 talent evaluation and Whitten had a day 2 talent evaluation, that is apples to apples. Why is it complex? At this time Mayer could be taken at the end of the 1st to the middle of the 2nd round in this draft class. Being compared to Jason Whitten is a very good thing. However, taking Mayer in the middle of the 1st round flies in the face of best talent available is all I am saying.
As far as your second question for Brady and Russell. You know the answer to that, an apple compared to an orange. Brady was a 6th round talent and Russell was a 1st round talent, not the same thing.
Hockenson was not being used by the Lions, because St. Brown was better, and he is our intermediate route and possession receiver. So, I agree with you, the Lions giving Hockenson a monster contract, or drafting a TE with day 2 talent in the middle of the 1st does not make any sense.

Geezer, I don't think you understand how draft comps work. When a draft prospect gets compared to an NFL player, they are getting compared to their NFL skillset and accomplishments, not how they were viewed coming out of college. By your logic, if a QB prospect got a comp to Tom Brady, you wouldn't take that QB until the 6th round?

What? You can't mix hindsight and college performance. Brady was a 6th round pick because of performance and athleticism coming out of college. He further developed due to coaching, system compatibility, and desire to improve, when got to the Patriots. He made himself into a great QB when he got to the pros.

What does that have to do with anything? I'm just telling you when you see a draft prospect's NFL comparison, they are comparing to that player's NFL career, not how they were perceived/graded in college. So if you see Mayer being compared to Jason Witten, it is comparing him to what Witten was as a player in the NFL, not the 3rd round caliber player he was coming out of college.
By your logic, if someone's comp to Mayer is David Njoku, Mayer should be taken in the top 20 based on that.

Yeah, I really think Geezer is not on the same page with NFL comps.

We've already got a good offense. Our defense sucks. This isn't rocket surgery.

No, they are not comparing NFL careers to draft prospect for this comparison. What gave you that idea. They are comparing physical traits, skill sets, athleticism and college performance.
According to your description above, Mayer should catch Whitten's 1238 receptions for 13,046 yards with 11 Pro Bowls over a 17-year career and become a future HOF. Hell yeah, I would draft Mayer Number 1 and not worry about TE for 15 years.

Against elite defenses you need all the weapons you can get. Between free agency and the draft we have plenty of resources to do both. BTW rocket science.

We have plenty of weapons. And we wouldn't have to rely on them so much if the defense wasn't giving up so many big plays (there's a reason we lead the league in 30+ point games, and it's not because we run up the score).
And thanks for correcting my "error." I never would have known.

Still luv you too, Rusty and you are welcome. Not worried about defense, AG and DC will get it there.
I really question your thought process here. You got some kind of dyslexia of the brain.
Last year, the most common comparison made for Sauce Gardner was Richard Sherman. Richard Sherman was a 5th round pick and not very highly touted and there were 23 CBs drafted ahead of him. So you're saying that comp was based on his college traits and accomplishments? By your logic Sauce should have been a 5th round pick at best.

You’re wrong on this one Geezer.
You have to give me examples, articles, or whatever. To do some type of career extrapolation comparison (only a sports journalist would do this) for a kid is coming out of college (his simulated career would be like so and so) is just plain bad evaluation. Whenever you extrapolate anything, it comes with an element of error and risk. You can only evaluate what you see and hear for any draft prospect. If NFL teams are doing this, they are fucking themselves with bad info.

Why when entering the draft, would you compare one college players career to another college players career? You’ve already seen how that player had performed in college. The idea of player comps is to give an idea of that players projection to the NFL.

Let me repeat, draft evaluation (Day 1, Day 2 and Day 3 placement) is based on physical traits, skill set, athletic measurement, and college performance throughout an individual college career. We could also add "position ranked importance" for draft placement.
NFL comparison only encompasses "Gardner compared to Sherman" involve similar physical traits, play style or skill set, and athletic measurement.
The idea of player comps is to give an idea of that players projection to the NFL.
Nope disagree, player comparisons can't project what an individual will do in the NFL. Player comparisons only provide a "similar to" based on traits, skill set, and athletics.
